SD Card compatibility issue?

Lexar 32GB 2000x works perfectly for me. I had tried Lexar 1000x but there was some faltering. 2000x had been used in other cameras, but when reformatted in the M10 it worked perfectly. I intend to stick with this card type.

I have two Lexar SDXC 1000x Professional UHS-II (128GB, Class 10) cards, which I use for both, the SL and the M10.

I switch those cards regularly.

First thing I do once inserted is in-camera format.

I only shoot raw, no jpegs.

Never had any problems.

It seems some people have issues with sd cards and some dont which likely points to some cameras being off but not every camera. If it bothers you that much just send the camera back and ask for a new one.

As reported in the post requesting beta testers, 'Leica will publish shortly a Leica M10 firmware update which is supposed to improve SD card compatibility.' Assuming that all M10 cameras have the same current firmware, the variability is more likely to be SD card related than camera related.

Some people have waited 6 months to obtain an M10, and waiting for a firmware update seems like a better option than trying to get a replacement camera and be put back in the queue.  SD card issues were well documented with the M9, and I've had intermittent card reading issues with both M246 and M10, so it does seem to be a Leica firmware issue.

Do firmware updates require Windows, or are they released for Macs as well? How are they installed?

As in all tragedies in life, there has to be a little comedy to make it bearable.  How are they installed, you ask?  https://us.leica-camera.com/Photography/Leica-M/Leica-M10/Downloads  Through your SD card :)

The update file is loaded to an sd card with either a pic or mac and the sd card is put into the camera and the file transferred to the camera. The update file is Leica and camera specific. One nice thing about Leica is the process can be reversed. I.e.: you can load older firmware.

If it is of any interest or use to anyone, I have a complete library of all versions of the M8, M9, M240 and SL firmware updates. PM me if you need anything.

The latter is unfortunately not universally correct.:(

As I understand, SD-cards up till and inclusive 32 GB (SD and SDHC) must be formatted according to FAT(32). This is also what happens when formating a 32 GB card in the "SDFormatter 4.0" from SD Association.

Cards with higher capacity than 32 GB (SDXC) must be formatted according to the exFAT protocol.

Normally the host device (camera) will recognize the capacity of the actual card inserted and operate the card accordingly to the proper format.

Nevertheless, I have experienced that my M10 will change the format of a 32 GB SDHC from FAT(32) to exFAT when formating directly in camera.

This means that my 32 GB card will be operated in a format that originally was ment for cards with higher capacity from 64 GB and higher.

Could instability issues be caused by the camera not recognizing the actual card in use / not operating according to the protocol needed?

Any comments would be welcome.

This is not quite correct, cards of 32 GB and larger must be formatted to exFAT, smaller cards are formatted to FAT32, but may be formatted to exFAT as well. In general Leica cameras may perform better with exFAT crds.

I do respect the knowledge and experience in this forum.

However, this issue is a bit frustrating - and I think it needs to be cleared, because:

1. According to SanDisk official homepage the SD-cards are factory formatted with the following standards:

    SD            2GB or lower           FAT16

    SDHC       4GB to 32 GB         FAT32

    SDXC        64GB or higher       exFAT

"All cards come pre-formatted and do not need to be formatted out of the box" (SanDisk)

2. The "SD Formatter 4.0" (SD Association) default will format a 32GB SDHC in FAT32.

No options are given - it will not be possible to format this card to an alternative protocol with this tool "SD Formatter 4.0"

3. The M10 will change a 32GB SDHC from FAT32 to exFAT when re-formatted directly in camera

I suppose that the camera very well knows what is the best format to use :-)

And I do respect the experience claiming that a M-camera prefers storage formatted in exFAT.

According to the M's Manual: "If the memory card has been formatted in another device, such as a computer, you should reformat it in the camera".

But don't we have a discrepancy when the "official" format tool mandatory use a different protocol - and also the big manufacturers use a different protocol as a default - compared to Leica?

Briefly expressed:

Some photographers using a specific card in a specific camera potentially could operate their systems with a different protocol compared to other photographers using the exact same equipment.

Will this lead to performance differences - or even issues?

The crux is in the use of the word mandatory. A higher than 32 GB card must be formatted to exFAT as FAT32 will not support larger cards (nomen est omen), but exFAT can and may be used for smaller cards.
