eleskin Posted January 24, 2017 Share #1 Posted January 24, 2017 Advertisement (gone after registration) I saw the other thread on why others would not upgrade to the M 10. I am starting this one to ask everyone why they would upgrade. My reasons are simple and logical. My last M purchase believe it or not was the M8 10 years ago! I am still using my M8, and I have calculated that over 10 years, it cost me $39 USD a month. I will probably use the M10 for another 10 years and that comes out to $54 USD per month. Not bad. Aside from that, $6500 is not peanuts for everyone. I have been using a Sony A7r and Fuji X-PRO 1 and X-Pro 2 to fill the gap which has worked very well over the years. I just did not feel the improvements from one model to the next were large enough to justify the purchase price. Now with the M10, and I am comparing it to the M8, I would say for me, it will be a HUGE improvement, so for people like me, the $6500 USD is not that big of a deal. Another thing is this: Even My M8 files, when up rezzed, hold up surprisingly well to the X Pro 2 and A7r, which is a testimony to the high quality of Leica lenses and the sensors. So with the new M10, I am sure applying the same logic, the digital decay should be minimal. I just hope they would come out with a M 10P version. For over $6000 USD, I want that choice fairly soon. hollisd Posted January 24, 2017 Share #2 Posted January 24, 2017 How long after a new model's launch have they released the P versions? Any way to verify that M10-P has been officially registered?
Herr Barnack Posted January 24, 2017 Share #3 Posted January 24, 2017 I cannot recall how long the M240 was on the market before the M-P came out, but I think it was about 1.5 to 2 years. I would expect about the same wait for the M10-P. As for the M10, I would expect that it will take 6 months or so for the initial buying frenzy to subside before a person would be able to walk in to their Leica dealer and walk out with an M10. That delay will give us time to see if the camera has any bugs that need to be corrected via firmware upgrades. The rear LCD on the M10 is Gorilla Glass as was the original M240. Given that, I am inclined to wait for the advent of the M10-P which will hopefully have a sapphire glass LCD screen, which was one of the upgrades that came with the M-P. Gorilla Glass is probably plenty strong and scratch resistant, but sapphire glass provides we OCD types with an added measure of peace of mind. steamboat Posted January 27, 2017 Share #4 Posted January 27, 2017 I'm with you. My eight year old M8.2 has been great. Purchased new in 2008 it has 120,000+ exposures. I am looking forward to everything about the M10. A proper upgrade.
digitalfx Posted January 27, 2017 Share #5 Posted January 27, 2017 Going from an M8 or M8.2 to M10 would be a huge update...a no brainer IMO. There are too many reasons why, but just a few: 1- No IR Filters (this alone would be enough for me) 2- Full Frame 3- Speed (night and day) 4- Better IQ 5- Significantly better low light performance. Hello Eleskin, $39 USD is an interesting number. Because part of what a person pays for when buying a digital camera is, effectively, "film & processing": How many "rolls of film" & "prints" did you not have to buy? That might be a useful way of determining what the actual cost has been, since: To come up with a comparable cost for a film camera body it would be necessary to include the film & processing costs over time to the cost of the camera body. Which means that the "film" & "processing" costs that it was not necessary to buy can be subtracted from what was spent for the digital camera body when determining its "actual" cost. Owning the relatively new M262, I'd add to this good list: live view, focus peaking, improved viewfinder.
