First impressions - M10

You know it is kind of funny.  We are all so gun shy when it comes to saying anything too over the top.  We've been there so many times before.

I'm dying  to really tell you how great everything is.  I shot some color shots in a restaurant last night and some of the 25000 ISO shots were fantastic.  1250 ISO was really nice and skin tones are the best.

Rick can you comment on the new viewfinder? I do not wear glasses and was wondering how much easier it is to focus over the M240/M262

Im not Rick, but IMO the difference is subtle...but enough to notice an improvement.

I wear glasses, and still cant see the full 35mm frame line...28mm, not a chance with glasses. But focusing...the RF seems to click when its in focus and my percentage of in focus shots has increased significantly over the M240 and especially the M9.

Again, its not a huge difference...but just enough to make a difference for me. YMMV

I am overjoyed with this camera. The speed difference is significant, I'm getting a much higher percentage of shots in focus, the colors are great straight out of the camera and I love this ISO knob.

At first I thought it was a odd addition...but being able to set ISO before I even turn on the camera, and quickly adjust as I shoot is really a nice addition. Leica has succeeded in making the best digital M ever.

So even though you do where glasses your hit rate for focus has gone up with the M10 over the M240. For me this is the $6595 question. I would love to think that the smaller size, better color and DR will make me a better photographer yet I know unfortunately this will not be the case....

I picked up my M10 this Monday, just a little less than a week after the announcement. I typically don't do this so early, but the Leica Store here in LA got mine in so I jumped.

So far, so good. The only complaint is the battery life.

Color is great Sensor sensitivity up to 25000 is UNREAL

Monochrome setting is interesting (but not getting rid of my M246 or even original Mono yet!)

Speed of buffer is insanely impressive

SIZE I thought wouldn't matter, but I like the feel more than the M9 and M240 bodies.

Did I mention SPEED... I just keep it in continuous, because it keeps up. I don't shoot THAT much or fast but it couldn't hurt to have millisecond changes in scenes.

The viewfinder and critical focus, even on the two vintage sum microns I tested it on is really impressive. I haven't yet put my newer APO or ASPH lenses on it.

I'm going to do a YouTube real world video shortly. I typically don't, but I think this one DESERVES it.

Leica did it right.

I KNOW... I feel like, "fuck, something HAS to be wrong with this camera"... OK, the battery... but I kinda don't care...

It's that fucking good.

Mine has defiantly improved..but as I said, the difference in the RF is very subtle. So YMMV, but for me it was just enough to make a big difference in my critical focus success rate.

You'll love it.  Easier to focus and easier to see the lines.

If, you did wear glasses it will be better but, I don't wear glasses.  I wear mono vision contact lenses like Jono and love them.  If, you can go in and try it at your dealer.

But, I put my glasses on and looked into the finder.  I can't quite see the 28mm lines.  I have to push my glasses into the finder to get close to seeing them.  I wouldn't want to do this as I'd wreck my glasses over time.  I know I could get a rubber eye cup.

Hope this helps?

Ha.  I know, right.

I picked mine up last night after work and my battery is still on 40%.  Probably, not as bad as my M9 and not as good as my M240.  Even the battery is at least ok.

It should improve as a step away from playing with the EVF and the LCD.

So far I have no complaints about the battery...but keep in mind the battery needs at least 3-4 cycles before you get maximum performance.

And as Rick said...generally during the first 3-4 charges we are playing with the new toy more than usual anyway, so battery life should never be evaluated during this honeymoon :)

just checked my battery...charged it 2 days ago. Ive used it sparingly during the past two days, but have been playing with menus a lot, setting up profile, and looking at images on the LCD, shooting test images, etc....and then this evening shot at least a hundred images at an event. Battery is now at 50%.

Totally get that the battery has to charge, etc.

The M240/M246 spoiled me

to update my post above...I actually shot 200 images last night and was on day two with the battery still at 50% with lots of just playing around for those two days.

This was with very little LV shooting though. I think the battery is quite respectable if you use the camera mostly as a rangefinder. Not sure yet how LV will impact this...but again I think we should wait at least 3-4 charge cycles before determining how much life we get.

I think 2-3 batteries is all you need. I kept 3 with my M240 and never had a situation where I needed to charge in the middle of shooting. So far it seems like the same is true with the M10, but the added benefit of carrying smaller and lighter batteries. Generally I always kept 2 with me and one left on the charger unless I was traveling.

I have two batteries ordered and I'm confident that's all I will need. The battery life is, in my experience after a week, excellent. I had some trouble with draining on the first charge, but I couldn't wait to fully charge it -- had to get out there. Once I fully charged it, battery life was/is excellent.

The camera really sounds great; probably,I will acquire one.  However, the last ten years or so have taught me to wait awhile before lunging into a new Leica digital.  Regards, Ron

Color:  It seems that under certain (all?) lighting conditions as ISO increases yellow saturation needs to be reduced by roughly (very roughly) -20.

I'm sure this is not the final profile from Leica.

Rick

p.s.  Maybe that is why Steve Huff's potatoes look so yellow.

First Impression.  I haven't used it much as I just picked it up yesterday but the smaller size is noticeable right away, feels perfect. I know the weight reduction was small but it does feel lighter. The new view finder is a great improvement.   A couple of things I have noticed that I don't like. The red indicators for exposure at the bottom of the viewfinder is very dim and doesn't indicate the ISO on startup (in Auto iso) I don't like the sharp corners on the top plate. The rear screen protrudes from the body. The balance is now front heavy. When sitting on a flat surface with a 50 Lux mounted the lens touches the surface, or in other words tips lens down. The thicker body on the 240 would sit flat. The new M10 is not perfect, but in my opinion it is vast improvement.

Nice review. I am glad you covered the 28mm focal length because that is my favorite family vacation focal length. Works good to get everyone in a single frame without having to back into the middle of the street.
