Very nice picture! Do you have one where gramma isn’t cropped? I think pics like that are more dynamic when a stationary subject is whole instead of partially off the print.

By the way, precious moment. I hope this is framed in baby’s room!

Mhicks,

Glad you like the photo...as to the crop. Because I was very close to the grandmother and using the 50mm the image was highly dominated by the subject’s blue jeans. Thus the cropping. But you may be right. Thanks again.

When working at small papers I used to dread ribbon cuttings, and when I was the photo editor did everything possible to avoid assigning them to staff, but now when you work at a company that is celebrating a new local office and you have to be there anyhow and the cute kid makes it interesting . . . .

Note that I said simple - which is not the same as easy ;) The learning is in practicing.

Basically the camera only does a few things - exposure parameters and (manual) focus. That is all. The rest is up to the user.

Does anyone have a good recommendation on where to start to learn the M10 system, menu, custom features.. etc?

Is there anything in particular? As has been said the manual is very good, except for that part they left in German on pg. 182 . . . .

Just try it out.  If possible, use the camera meter and set the aperture and shutter speed manually.  Initially keep the ISO at a moderate 200 to 800 setting and see how different subjects work out at various apertures.  You will soon get the hand of it and develop your own preferences.  The good thing about digital photography is that you can just delete things you really don't like and you don't have to keep using more film to try things out!

this is such a great scene in a big way but IMHO the digital rendition kills it.  I'd make a friendly suggestion to try to think of a B&W film stock to replicate it here.  It will add some classic-ness and authenticity to the image.  The level of micro-contrast is amateurish and, quite frankly, heart-breaking.  I am only making this comment b/c the scene is soooo good and well-framed.
