Thank you for your kind words about my pictures.

We both share a love for Kodachrome. I grew up shooting it with my M3 and M4 in tandem. a 50 on the M4 and a 35 with goggles on the M3 - much simpler times!.

In case you aren't familiar with the photos of Nathan Benn, here is a link to his website, Kodachrome Memory. Hope you enjoy while you convalesce.

Brings back so many memories!  Thank you.

Hi Daniel,

Hope you don't mind me joining in the group critique.

I just checked your flickr page and first of all "Bravo" for wrestling down and mastering the 28 focal length. that's huge in and of itself.

I'm going to gently disagree with pattyfrank and Dabbler's suggestion regarding shooting in black and white. its invaluable advise for everyone ( I just came off 2+ years of working strictly with the monochrom because i was having trouble seeing graphically in color) but I'm not sure it is the best move for you at this time.

The way i see it, you have a great love for color. Your main issue is that you are saturating globally so your images are lacking depth and at times this makes it hard for the viewer to see what you want them to first see as they explore your image. in other words because all your colors have the same value, the overall image appears flat. If you are working in lightroom i would suggest choosing the element/s that most excite you in the image and then enhance just that color. Start there, see how it looks then continue if you think its necessary.

My link to my website is below if you are curious about what kind of images i make. All shot with Leica M digital cameras.

Thank you for taking the the time to consider my questions and to look at my Flickr page. Your insight about global saturation, (vs enhancing the particular/important colors), creating a flat image, really seems like something I want to explore. I am guilty of attempting to create a preset emulating how I remember Kodachrome and applying it to everything. This may not have been the best path.  And thank you for sharing the link to your website. Your photos are an inspiration.  Stay healthy, Daniel

I’ll second Kwesi’s suggestion regarding selective color saturation in LR. Easy to do in LR using the HSL module and/or the brushtool.

On March 6, there was a nighttime launch of a SpaceX rocket.  I was 50 miles away, but I figured I would try to take a photo of it anyway.  I had no idea what to expect.  The night was clear, and I got to watch the path of the rocket, with the flames behind the rocket clearly visible against the night sky.  The TV was playing behind me, so I knew what was happening in real time.  When the time came for stage separation, I saw things I didn't understand, but I kept taking photos anyway.  I was using my 90mm Summicron, expecting nothing useful, taken from so far away.

Later that night, the photo below at the left was the clearest of my images, but I figured the whole attempt was useless, and I had no idea how I, or the M10 had failed.  The photo at the right might give some idea of the scale, and the photo in the middle shows what I thought I was seeing - but it was so implausible, I gave up on further editing.

A few minutes ago, I found out the real explanation of what was going on, and the M10 did correctly record what I saw.  The explanation can be found here, along with good photos and video:  https://www.space.com/spacex-rocket-launch-nebula-images-by-photographers.html

Should this happen again, maybe a 1000mm lens could have my M10 attached to it, if I could find an appropriate external viewfinder to help me keep the camera aimed correctly.  I didn't hav have a tripod, but next time I'll know better.

Not sure that these images belong in this thread, but I'm very impressed that the M10 did manage to capture what it did.

Two similar photos taken this morning, one with my M10, and the other with my Nikon D750.  Both were edited in Lightroom, along with a few more, trying different lenses.  I have one more image I'll upload tomorrow, taken with a 15mm Voigtlander lens.  As for these two, at this size (they were exported at 900 pixels wide), I can't find any obvious reasons to prefer one over the other, although the second photo has something included to give it "action" and "life".   The top photo was taken an hour or so before the bottom photo, which explains the lighting changes.

I didn't know what to expect.  What I do know is the photo taken with the Nikon was effortless.  Press a button on the back to focus, take the photo, and let the camera do all the work.  The Leica photo took a bit more effort in Lightroom, but I got what I wanted.

Starting now, I hope to be using DarkTable instead of Lightroom for editing.  It's an open source program, so there is no charge, although I do want to find a way to donate to them.

One more photo to go with the other two.  This was taken with my M10 with a "Super Wide - Heliar 15mm f4.5 aspherical Voigtlander lens.  When I bought the lens, I also got a viewfinder to show what the lens would do on my M8.2 camera, but now that I can get the full effect, I just used "Live View".  Next time I'll have it on a tripod, so I don't need to correct distortion from the lens not pointing straight ahead.

I'm much more pleased with the lens than I expected.  I sort of thought it would be a fancy toy that I'd rarely use, but now I can see real potential for it.

Photo was taken in the early morning, when the lighting seemed a bit more impressive.

RHS Hyde Hall Garden in Essex in the late afternoon - taken before I went into self isolation!  Will now have to wait and see what it looks like in the summer.

Not meant to be artistic - Quick and dirty test in low light of the M10 Monochrome and the Noctilux 75 1.25 ASPH. I'm impressed with the richness of the tonalities from the Mono and the film-like grain pattern at ISO 3200. Crispness of detail and smooth Bokeh from the Nocti 75.
