Nice! Looks like Summilux 35mm preasph

You are both quite right.

The 2005 re-issue was intended to be an exact copy (minus the radioactive glass and presumably with modern coatings) of the original that was produced in the late 1950s. It is therefore not surprising that the rendering of the re-issue is actually very similar to that of its ancestor - including very noticeable spherical aberrations (aka "glow"), esp. when shot wide open and with strong highlights in the frame.

Nor is it surprising that it shares common traits with the pre-ASPH Summilux, which came a few years after the Nikkor: it is unlikely that the Leitz designers didn't draw inspiration from the work of their Japanese colleagues - if only because their optical formulae are actually quite similar Gauss types, with 7 elements in 5 groups.

Her is another with the converted 2005 re-issue Nikkor 35/1.8 on the M10M, wide open at MFD

I had exactly the same thought about these images. Lovely images but I felt like my eyes kept moving in an out of focus as I scanned over the images.  To be fair it may just be my 63 years and cataracts!

It's not your eyes (or at least not entirely 😉) - it's the loss of contrast and "highlight bleeding" in some parts of the image that is induced by uncorrected spherical aberration. Stop the lens down a bit and it's gone. The Summilux 35/1.4 v1 behaves similarly in this respect. It probably didn't help either that I left the hood at home for this series... Below is another extreme example - focus was on the writing at the top of the mirror IIRC.

Back to the cows. Despite their ominous, unfriendly look, this bunch was actually rather peaceful.

These Baltars are quite impressive. Not as subtle and warm as the Speed Panchros, but bolder and sharper across the frame. Different strokes...

Ecar,

Thank you for the explanation. I have read many posts over time about the Summilux 35 "issues" but never had one in my hands to experience directly.

Btw,  I love the fact that you are using vintage lenses on the newer M10 series.  One of the things I really enjoyed about my former M9M was the fun of finding and using vintage lenses.  The M9M is sadly gone but I kept all my vintage lenses and just ordered a "new to me" M10 Monochrom.  Looking forward to seeing how my 40's, 50's and 60's lenses work (or not) on the M10M

Cheers!
