These lovely bees are standing on a sea of golden honey (3kg's), capped under a sheet of fresh white wax- or rather- they were B) before I robbed them yesterday! You can see them trying to get it back in per the photos above...

 

If you view these photos anytime in the next 6 weeks or thereabouts some of the bees you are seeing will undoubtedly still be alive. If you view them after that time it is likely they will have all passed through old age... (sad face)

This is with a 1951 Leica 90mm Elmar f4 on a digital camera.  Now that I've started to use it more I like it better than I did.  It does very well in black and white, especially in flat lighting.  I had it cleaned, and it's very sharp, although at this resolution it's not that evident.  This is a carving on the facade of the Memorial Church at Stanford.

this details shows just about everything you want to see in a happy beehive: capped honey at the top, multi hued 'bee bread' bee food made from pollen, capped and uncapped brood. Nurse bees in attendance:
