Advertisement Posted January 28, 2017 Posted January 28, 2017 Hi finarphin, Take a look here Critique 35mm Summaron f/3.5. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
cobbu2 Posted January 31, 2017 Share #22  Posted January 31, 2017 (edited) I have an example of the original version, a 1951-vintage LTM that I used as my primary 35mm lens with an adapter until I replaced it with a 35mm CV Color-Skopar PII about a year ago.  Here are two sample shots on my M8:   Ketchikan, Alaska    North of Skagway, Alaska from a moving train  Yes, a bit lower on the contrast scale, but not a problem with a little PP, and certainly sharp enough.  It's small size almost makes it a pancake, protruding no further than my Voigtlander "replacement"... I still have it by the way with no plans to let it go as I still use it on my LTM bodies. Edited January 31, 2017 by cobbu2
lundrog Posted January 16, 2018 Share #23  Posted January 16, 2018 Taken with 35mm Summaron f 3.5 (earlier LTM version) on M9 with adaptor. I find that the 'Summaron family' are generally very nice lenses.  Rhodo 1.jpg  William  Great shot, love the colors. a lens on my list for sure. Ko.Fe. Posted January 17, 2018 Share #24  Posted January 17, 2018 One ex-Midland Leica person to whom I was lucky and honored to know was not excited at all while commenting on OP's subject.  I used to own two copies. One M mount with goggles (professionally cleaned) and one clean copy M mount no goggles. I let go both of them before I get M-E. None of them impressed me on color film. On BW film scans both where above lowest score (for me) CV Color Skopar 35 2.5 lens, but still less impressive Leitz made lens I have tried so far.... But for the build it is most impressive Leitz M lens for me.
tsleica Posted January 17, 2018 Share #25 Â Posted January 17, 2018 It's a nice lens for digital..esp stopped down a bit..and on a tripod..for near macro..at f16/22..works surprisingly well..nice resolution and low distortion..
tobey bilek Posted January 18, 2018 Share #26 Â Posted January 18, 2018 Is one of the magic Leitz oldies. Â Â Problem being mine keeps fogging up inside.
jaapv Posted January 18, 2018 Share #27 Â Posted January 18, 2018 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello Pico, Â Another thought: Â Does your 35mm F3.5 Summaron have its red index dot for attaching the lens to the camera at (or near) F16 or at F22.? Â If the red index dot is at F22 then that lens needs the add on "goggles" in order to focus properly. Â Best Regards, Â Michael The flat spot with locking pin on the top of the mount is a better indicator.

maximilianm3 Posted January 18, 2018 Share #29 Â Posted January 18, 2018 Pictures to post so that we can see what you are referencing? Just type summaron 3.5 into google and you will find it. Â My only and therefore best and worst 35mm lens is the goggled Summaron. It suffered form haze and misalignment issues of the goggles, but since i fixed it myself I'm happy with it. Alas, no matter what one has, there is always gas for something 'better'. The problem is that no goggled lens is going to be significantly better to justify 1000 or more euros. stray cat Posted February 22, 2018 Share #30 Â Posted February 22, 2018 I'm the latest caretaker of the "body cap" in question - it came attached to a beautiful M2 I bought through the classifieds here from Pico (who, gentleman that he is, made me completely aware it was the lens in question). It seemed to have a fair bit of haze so I had it CLA'd by Youxin Ye - when it returned an incredibly short time later it was sparkling. It is a wonderful lens. I also have a goggled f3.5 Summaron and a version IV Summicron. All are equally impressive. For whatever reason I now find myself using this lens more than I use the Summicron. Anyway, I've just done a quick example from a hand-held picture taken on Ilford XP2 Super with the "body cap" (slight sharpening for clarity): Â Â Â My conclusion is that Leica simply don't make bad lenses.
Ecar Posted February 22, 2018 Share #31  Posted February 22, 2018 I guess you should be commended for saving the lens from Pico's tools
Pyrogallol Posted February 22, 2018 Share #32  Posted February 22, 2018 I have a 1950’s screw 3.5 Summaron and it seems to enjoy taking pictures into the sun, nice and sharp. In the 1970’s I had the M3 goggled version and never had any complaints about it.
tobey bilek Posted February 22, 2018 Share #33 Â Posted February 22, 2018 Have a look at the rear element of the lens: usually the rear elements of all Summarons (2.8, 3.5 and 5.6) look foggy. Normally this is not a big problem, but with some examples it may be worse. My 5.6/28 mm wasn't usable at first when I had bought it. After the lens was cleaned it is as you could wish. ' Â Nice if clean. Â Problem being it will fog again in a few years. Â Â I gave up on all old leica lenses
poli Posted February 24, 2018 Share #34 Â Posted February 24, 2018 (edited) Hopefully mine will stay nice. Bought one a few months ago, sent it to Wil van Manen for CLA. Very happy now [emoji4] Â Edited February 24, 2018 by paulhek

But do have it on my M-Rokkors - the 28 is famed (blamed) for it; but I saw some haze on the last element last months also on the 40. Should I spend € 250 again on these two lenses even though they are superb when 'clean'? So I share your concern.
