Please convince me the SL 50/1.4 is better than summilux

Has anybody tried a close-up lens with the Summilux ? Maybe thighslapper ?

After all it is an apo corrected lens, so a good starting point.

The SL 50 only focuses up to 0.6 m, but with a Marumi or Canon it should be possible to get closer with decent quality.

The Apo 50 is also strong in close-up mode - even without a lens, only with a macro adapter. Too bad that there is no macro adapter for the SL system.

All close-up lenses are only 77mm. I wonder is this a problem regarding vignetting - or is it ok, just like the 24.90 ?

Or is IQ poor and no substitute for a macro lens ?

Yes......  Works fine with a +5 dioptre Marumi and takes focus down to about 10cm. I thought I had posted some images .....

Just like the 24-90 and image quality unaffected.  You need a 77-82 step down ring. No noticeable vignetting.

Being an enthusiast, pretty marginal, I'd say.

Agreed... and posting pics at F4 and F8 is pretty useless as well.

I have the 50SL coming in to shoot it at 1.4 and a touch faster. If I wanted to shoot at F4 or F8, I would just use the 24-90.

* Some people may not want the 24-90. They may go with a 16-35, 50, 90-280 set.

* It's generally accepted that *if* you're pushing it then the 90-280 is better at 90mm than the 24-90. So why not the same option for those with the 50mm/24-90.

I also, will use the 50 mostly when I need faster apertures. However it's good to know that the 50 is as good as the zoom at mid apertures, which it may not have been. So useful to me.

That's true.... didnt think of it that way.

I would say though....the 50 certainly better be as good the 24-90 at F4. If it's not... there a problem. The 50 is stopped down a fair amount... and the zoom is neatly wide open. Wide open @50 the zoom is F3.6.

Not everyone need f1.4. Many of my friends keep asking me,  the VM24-90 is large and heavy(compare to Nikon, Canon, Sony FE) and how about the image quality and the image resolution ? No one will question the image quality of the prime lens SL-50/1.4. So base on my test, I will tell my friend that for a zoom lens, VM24-90 is good enough, the corner might be a little bit soft but it's convenience.

That looks great!! 1.4 is gorgeous... and no CA at all.

The 24-90 is not really that big compared to the Nikon 24-70VR. The Nikon version is longer physically longer, but weighs 70 grams less. I love that the 24-90 goes to 90... that was one of my main issues with the Nikon... wanted a touch more range. I don't like the variable aperture of the Leica though.

The 24-90 really is not large when compared to similar FF lenses from Canon and Nikon. It's very similar in size.

If you need OIS, then the SL 24-90 is perfect. But if not then there are now other possible combinations with the SL 50 and much wider aperture: (that are more attractive/useful to me)   2/24-35, 1.4/50 and 1.4/85.

The SL 50 seems to be almost universal - regarding focal length and also regarding quality at all apertures and distances. A good starting point, though 50mm is probably a tad boring.

The Art 2/24-35 is actually the more useful lens in a crowded place or for documentation and for many other occasions.

And the Art 1.4/85 is new, but much better than anticipated (regarding AF speed and IQ). Maybe a bit too cold (and clinical), but in that regard it is similar to the SL 50.

Much earlier than expected I have now a almost complete AF setup. And could get rid of the R lenses ....  (But probably won't).   :)

My setup covers the bases I find.

If Leica will keep straight to their scheduled path, then we should very soon see the first Summicron SL 75 (offcial release in summer). Soon because they tend to show a few lenses before this date - as they did with the 90-280 and the 50.

And soon afterwards the much expected Summicron SL 90 (official release autumn).

Here again we have suddenly a "difficult choice" as it turns out we have three (four) options - that are maybe not equivalent, but all very attractive on their own ground.

+ Summicron SL 90 (or 75) as a lens with a special "thin" DoF (highly praised by Mr. Karbe). (A Summicron like a Summilux.) Quite small compared to the existing SL lenses.

+ Sigma 1.4/85 Art, with amazing AF speed on the Novoflex Canon AF adapter and excellent optical quality.

+ Nikon 1.4/105E. As big as the Summilux 50 (or bigger ?), focusing really well with the Novoflex Nikon AF adapter and highly praised for its outstanding IQ. (And currently a record holder).

A tough choice. Please convince me ...

What about collecting pics for comparison ?
