I wonder how they perform in shallow depth of field photography, yet I need sharpness in the focus point. Only  the SL body only currently.  I did shoot with the 50mm summicron v4 and 50mm planar, both amazing at f4 and more. At F2 they are not really crisp.  I had a chance to compare the apo 50mm to my 50mm zeiss. At f2 it's like the planar would have some layer missing in comparison(similar to the comparison of my owned 75 apo).  I had a chance to shoot a summilux asph quickly, and it did seem it is sharp off center as well. I did not have a chance to compare the pictures on computer.  50/75 really almost have that medium format detail/structure.  So main question is does the summilux also have this? How do apo and summilux compare in subject separation? Some say the apo is doing a better job for this, even it's only f2.  best regards    Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

LD_50 Posted December 23, 2016 Share #2 Â Posted December 23, 2016 Are you asking about the Summilux M? Â I compared extensively the Summilux and Summicron APO on my M-P240. I preferred everything about the Summicron other than price. Because of this I ended up buying the Summilux. Â Summilux had more shallow DOF (more subject separation), which makes nailing focus that much more difficult on an M body. On the SL it's easier with magnification on static subjects. Â I don't know what you mean by medium format detail/structure. The M and SL don't have medium format resolution or dynamic range (comparing to the current S sensor or the 50 MP Sony ones) so I don't see a medium format look with either lens. The Summilux has great optical performance but again I preferred my shots with the Summicron almost every time. I also was testing with an S006 and S-100 Summicron and those shots were pretty special. Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

Â I still prefer the Summicron. Â Also keep in mind the Summilux has markings showing the exact focal length, which may not be 50.0. I do not recall exactly but the one I tested was longer than 50.0. I had some billboards shot with Hasselblad, where they probably took advantage of the resolution, but the 24mp might be a bit low for that anyway. orc999 Posted December 24, 2016 Author Share #17 Â Posted December 24, 2016 certainly true. additionally most of billboards are photoshop composings. having said i see many large commercial prints which are not sharp. nobody seems to care. hardest rules for sharpness I see on stock - which, at least in my case, does not pay off a 4-5kusd lens.
