LeicaFinder518 Posted December 22, 2016 Share #1 Posted December 22, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi all, Just received my first R3 MOT electronic yesterday. The camera turns on, the automatic function seems to work, the light meter is functioning, but when the camera needs to work at shutter speeds lower than or equal to 1/8s the camera mirror stays up and the camera remains open including the curtain. Everything gets stuck until I remove the battery and advance the film advance lever. How can I fix this problem step by step? Do I need to clean the electromagnet? Is this an easy fix or not? Thanks! earleygallery Posted December 22, 2016 Share #2 Posted December 22, 2016 Assuming that you've just bought this camera I would return it for a refund and buy one that is fully functioning.
pgk Posted December 23, 2016 Share #3 Posted December 23, 2016 As a bit of an aside, it seems to me that R4 bodies are now cheaper than R3 bodies are. Also I seem to see less R3 bodies for sale. I just wonder if many are now becoming defunct and good ones are rarer and climbing slightly in price? Pity if so, because I always thought that the R3 was a lovely camera to look at and hold although the smaller R4 was equally appealing albeit in a slightly different way. earleygallery Posted December 23, 2016 Share #4 Posted December 23, 2016 For many years the R3 was the poor relation of the R line. The R4 being a newer body with more features commanded higher prices for many years but they do have a reputation for suffering electrical faults. There were far more of the R4 series bodies sold so I expect it's a combination of the reliability issue (although any working body today should be no less reliable than any other similar camera) and availability. dkCambridgeshire Posted December 26, 2016 Share #5 Posted December 26, 2016 Use the battery test function make sure the battery has sufficient charge and /or try a fresh set of batteries. dunk
LeicaFinder518 Posted December 28, 2016 Author Share #6 Posted December 28, 2016 All shutter speeds down to 1/15th second work, just below this the mirror gets stuck. I was wondering if this is an electromagnet problem. If it was the battery wouldn't the other speeds not work?
dkCambridgeshire Posted December 28, 2016 Share #7 Posted December 28, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) i recall when mirrors get 'stuck' on other cameras it is often a symptom of a failing battery/ batteries - remedied by fresh batteries. dunk
