A classic Cuban experience at the moment of my MP's Mechanical Perturbation (clutch mechanism stiffened preventing film advance). Luckily, the previous 10 films went through without a hitch. At least, I think they did, as the film counter doesn't work. Mechanical Perfection indeed! Another trip's on the cards for the MP, this time to Solmes (which was the plan for this body after the trip anyway).

I've had my new MP with its 28mm Elmarit f2.8 for a week and a half now. The primary images are what I had imagined, lovely definition, sharp, in both B&W and color. The first commercial scans though have been terrible, doing justice to nothing. The setup was simply wrong, I do not have a Fuji camera with a 55mm lens firing 4/3 shooting at very low shutter speeds. I'm shooting with a Leica MP with a 28mm lens at 2/3 with 1/125 shutter speeds. My raw slides (Provia 400) look fine, their scans are awful. Ilford 400F B&W is worse. I'm trying a new lab for high res, but am ready to go home cooked with my Nikon Coolscan unless there's a profound improvement.

I rarely think that scans do negatives or slides any justice. Have you tried a good drum scanning? That is the only time I think scans look nice.

Time for me to join this thread and family. I absolutely adore this camera and it will join some other Leicas that see commercial and personal use. Just bought it at Leica Boutique in Munich, Germany. 2003 or so era model just serviced by Leica in Solms and came with the added M Motor/Grip. It looks brand new.

Very sweeping statement. In any event, it all depends on 1) one's preferences, and 2) one's needs.

Sounds like a euphemism for something painful.

Sometimes it's better to enjoy what you have than to dismiss it because there is something else 'superior'. If ultimate image quality (whatever that might be) is the object then a 35mm negative is probably not the best place to start. Any half-decent 35mm film scanner, used properly, will do plenty of "justice" to a good film neg.

I love all your MP's too :D

As someone who is just finding their feet with RF cameras from scratch with a lowly M4-2 am I allowed to dream a little?

Black paint finish, classic engraving, vulcanite, black paint controls, MP wind on, Vulcanite, 0.85 finder with 4 frames, or perhaps an M6 Millennium with a black dot.

A quick lunch stop high above Fairbrook earlier today. Wind chill made it a little too cold to hang around....

1) There's nothing wrong with the M4-2 ;)

2) Perhaps I can help you live that dream a little sooner. I bought a standard BP MP off eBay, then sent it to Solms for vulcanite and 0.72-3 viewfinder. The charged about £600. It saved me £1500 on an ALC MP.

I am certainly not ashamed of my M4-2:)

I would not buy a new MP anyway. A little brass here and there adds character and hopefully would reduce the cost. Its nice to know i could still customise to my currently "thought to be perfect" spec though.

Cheers, Julian
