Ian, did you have them swap in a black hotshoe?

No, that's how it came.

Interesting observation - I'd assumed all MP Classic bodies had a black hotshoe but it seems that is not the case. Maybe they ran out of chrome hotshoes when they were doing the limited edition run (mine is number 478 of the 500)?;)

Interesting, the one's I've seen online have all had a regular silver hotshoe. I like yours better, though.

I'm close to buying a new-in-box MP Classic, but trying to think up a functional excuse for replacing the top plate with one that has the basic MP engraving. The real reason is aesthetic vanity, but that's embarassing. :)

... leica mp, a camera for a lifetime

... taking black & white photos with the analogue Leica is time-and-money-consuming

... but when you get the photos after a few weeks of developing/printing

... they always fascinate and make me smile

The Black shoe is for the Classic MP (Meterless version). That's all there is to it.

some black classic MP photos

Heck, even here the hotshoe is silver:

wattsy, seems like you've got very special copy :)

Yeah, I know! Just googled it and saw it. Funny though, all the Black Classic MPs I saw had the hot show. This must simply be that Leica picked up whatever they had on hand, just like their serial numbers jumping from the M4-P to M4-2 without any clear rule...

Still, I prefer the Black hot shoe.

The protective ring around the lens release button is silver on these MP Classics also. (Actually I thought you meant Horseshoe it was only when I re-read these comments did I realise you were talking about the hotshoe. But how can it be a HOT shoe when this camera has no power? No battery no meter. A black paint M2 almost.

Actually, the lens release collar is black paint on the MP Classic (at least it is on mine). It is chrome on the standard black paint MP.

A hotshoe doesn't require power from the camera - all it does is close a circuit between the central contact and the metal shoe. The shoe on the MP Classic is a hotshoe and will fire a flash just like the PC connector on a mechanical Hasselblad lens will do.

Ian,

So now I'm confused. Your pic you posted of MP Classic with 50 f2.5 shows a silver lens release button and silver collar around it as do the pics of the MP Classic un-boxing earlier. Perhaps the pic (cropped close below) isn't of your camera or the light is bouncing off the collar making it appear silver, in your pic and other pics of MP Classic shown earlier?

It's not really important but it does seem odd that Leica are adding chrome parts to the classic black paint look.

Regards, Lincoln
