JBA Posted June 11, 2011 Share #2224 Posted June 11, 2011 I love my MPs, and I'm nothing if not spoiled for cameras, but I've experienced a catastrophic rewind crank failing. Apparently, a screw came loose at some point, and the spring-loaded knob has gone AWOL leaving the spring (coiled around the toothpick). Who knew this could happen and when or where? Welcome, dear visitor! As registered member you'd see an image here… Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! Another crappy iPhone photo and a trip to Leica Ginza to see if this tiny piece can be replaced for a reasonable sum during the next three weeks while I pack up ten years of life to return home from Tokyo to the future Mrs. JBA. Happy to report that this camera has been otherwise bullet-proof.
 Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! Bateleur Posted June 20, 2011 Share #2228 Posted June 20, 2011 Nice article, I enjoyed the comment "Something about the entire package — the retro styling, the solid build, the feel and quality of the materials, and the ability to be operating without the need for electricity — makes you feel legitimate." Stealth3kpl Posted June 22, 2011 Share #2231 Posted June 22, 2011 I think I under exposed this. It's Tri-X in Diafine at 1600. I kind of like the look of it though. Pete Welcome, dear visitor! NB23 Posted June 23, 2011 Share #2232 Posted June 23, 2011 totally yes it is. it is very unlikely that any other M will ever achieve this beautiful noble simplicity. nice image Well, the M9-P for instance, with its missing film wind lever is even simpler and thus, more noble, IMO. NB23 Posted June 23, 2011 Share #2234 Posted June 23, 2011 A digital camera can compete with the MP? Based on the picture you were judging, I will have to admit that the M9-P looks even better (direct front view). But yeah, as soon as you turn that thick M9 around and look at the back of it with all the buttons and that screen, it becomes ugly.

NB23 Posted June 23, 2011 Share #2236 Posted June 23, 2011 Yes, but it would be a lovely body to use! I make money with my heavily used M8 at weddings and I don't have M9 lust. In reality, one's brain is not powerful enough to see the difference between a FF sensor and a cropped sensor simply through a viewfinder. I therefore use my 21 Lux and 35 lux asph lenses and don't bother with the silly question wether FF would've been better. The truth is that you don't know while looking through a viewfinder and framelines. One simply can't compute those things. It's all Psychological BS if you ask me. But after a long day of shooting digital, I take the whole week off and I clean myself from this digital mess by shooting B&W films and printing in the darkroom. That's what keeps me going, that's what cleans my mind: Film photography. No M9 camera will ever replace a roll of HP5 projected on a fine Baryta paper through a Focotar-2 50mm.
NB23 Posted June 23, 2011 Share #2237 Posted June 23, 2011 All this M9 lust is pure psychological BS, IMO. But I keep my theory for another day, for another post.
menos I M6 Posted June 23, 2011 Share #2238 Posted June 23, 2011 Ned, I used to think exactly that way for the better part of two years, using the heck out of my M8 and shooting film - no professional assignments though, but just enjoyment. Until the very last second, I told myself: film is the best (still do), the M8.2, I am using is nothing in short of the M9 for what I do (regarding the crop factor, this still holds 100% true) and that kind of money is simply not worth the addition of an M9. I got sold on an M9, when I finally experienced with my own eyes the real difference of shots between the two cameras from ISO 640 on (this is a mostly used ISO range for me - ISO640 and up). If wide angle is not your business (having a wonderful 21mm cropped and being happy with it, you sound like this is not a need), you will have one thing, that could surprise you with the M9: shear image quality in higher ISO. ISO2500 B&W shots simply look astonishing - no early banding or strange tonal ramps, just a much more usable sensor. I bet, that if you try one, you will love it. Only bad point, I could find so far is, that the files indeed are less sharp than M8 files and will need more sharpening (I usually sharpened M8 files in Lightroom with 40 %, while M9 files regularly need 60% with often more aggressive treshhold of 0.9 or 1.0, while M8 can shine with standard 0.8). Nevertheless, the M9 can't touch the MP, when it comes to it's slender handling and unmatched shooting experience (need of film and advance lever is an important thing indeed) - love my MP although the friendly French Airport Security nuked my ISO6400 film, last time, I used the MP!
