I sold that perfect lense,

of course not the MP

When you sold it, to buy a new Summilux, or a nice pre aspherical..... (than its not that bad)

I can imagine the feeling. I hate it to, sometimes I made pictures for the sale, packed everything and finally not sold the stuff.

Menos - Since noone else as answered your question, I will take a crack at it.

The 24 Lux is a superb lens, but it is large.

On the slimmer Film Ms, it feel a little unbalanced, top-heavy. But all in all, it is not a huge problem for me. Although I do prefer using it on my thicker M8.

Per, do you mind, to stick a Noctilux on the MP with silver dials, so one could see a size difference between the 24 and big 50?
A very quick (and unsharp) snap of the two lenses, but at least you can see the relative size. That's an f1.0 Noctilux.

Thank you Eddie.

I have not much problems with "large" and "heavy" in Leica M terms ;-)

I was always shying away by the price of the 21/ 24 Lux.

Thanks Peter, that is exactly the picture, I needed.

Is the 24 Lux also protruding beyond the bottom plate of a standard Leica M, similar to the Noctilux?

How is the focussing of the 21/ 24 Lux - how much turning, how damped (quick and easy like the 28 Cron ASPH or heavily damped and slow like the Noctilux)?

Are there any problems known to the 21/24 Lux, to look after?

I might look also for older posts for this topic (I guess, there are a few) or open a new 21/ 24 Lux thread.

I didn't use my 28 Cron much, since the R-D1 collects dust (was my favorite lens back then), I prefer the 35 Lux and Noctilux pairing and think about a fast wide angle.

That this ends not up in too much OT, here is the very first picture, I made OF my new Leica MP - I love it already ;-)

A 15" notebook j…u…s…t squeezes inside the bag as well, which makes up my daily office bag.

Without computer, I love this bag for two cameras.

May I ask what bag this is you are using? I'm still looking for a relatively small bag for everyday use.

Thank you,

Philipp

But this is not the 24mm summilux, it's the 24mm elmarit. Very different in size.

Oops, my bad, you are quite right Rob. Not awake enough. I looked at the lens and read the post underneath "how is the handling of the 24mm handling wise..." and just assumed it was an Elmarit.

Sorry Dirk! :o

I will try my best to answer some of the questions you have regarding the 24 Lux. This lens was the first "real" Leica lens I got, and it was a serious step up from the Summarit line that I began with. (Didn't want to invest too much before I knew what I was doing).

To say the 24 Lux is amazing would be quite bias, but I will say it anyways. What an amazing lens, it is an absolute dream, both on my cropped M8 and on my full-frame MP. Before I get too carried away, let me answer your questions:

1. No it does not pertrude on the bottom, actually if you lie the camera/lens down on a table it will tilt forwards a bit. Just eye-balling it, I'd say when holding the base-plate flat on the table, there is about a 4mm to 5mm between the lens shade and the table.

2. Focusing on the 24 Lux is like pushing butter across a hot pan. The throw is a little over 90 degrees, so don't have to spin your whole wrist around the lens to go from minimum focus to infinite, which is quite nice in my opinion.

3. Problems? Not that I know of, but there is some "lens characteristics" to be aware off. Like most Summiluxes, the 24mm is also maximized at f/1.4; that's not to say its not great at other apertures, but in my opinion after f/5.6 the 24mm Elmarit fares a little better (ever so slightly) - it's just a little more contrasty and a bit less distortion (actually a lot less, but I have a profile for the 24 Lux in LR that fixes it for me so.... :p) Oh yea, and the Elmarit is about 400 kg lighter. So if you're going to be shooting f/4.0 - f/8.0 most of the time, the Lux will be a bit extravagant.

4. Price. Yes, the monster $6,600 (+tax) price tag is pretty extreme, BUT there are many ways around it. What I did was buy mine in Hong Kong. At the time, the lens was prices at $6,000 and I got mine for $5,500 (tax included, with all the papers and everything, in Mint-Like New condition). Which doesn't seem like a lot, but after taxes and what nots, it comes down to be over $1000 in savings. That said, if you have to fly to HK deliberately for purchasing the lens, it's not really worth it...

Philipp -

What do you need to fit in your bag? I am a strong advocate for the Filson alternatives. They are a hunting company and make great gear with tin-cloth (a super durable material) and have a variety of bags to fit whatever you might need. Of course, you'll have to buy some inserts yourself, but they are definitely worth a look.

Philipp, it is a "Oskar's Daybag" from A&A.

I had about 5 different similar bags before this and stick with this bag quite satisfied for a while now - that means something ;-)

Haha Peter - I didn't realize, even after having dug up several write ups about the lens - must be hazy eyes here.

Thanks Eddie for the detailed answers - this gives a much better feel, than reading endless reviews.

Trying one out in the shops around here is also not exactly possible ;-)

In my opinion, a trip to Hong Kong is always worth it - be it on top of a lens' price or not - love that place! It is quite a lot nicer for camera shopping than China mainland also, as dealers here loose more and more on reality and surprisingly their touch to customers.

I think, I thought this many times before, but the second hand MP will be my last Leica major purchase in China mainland - I had to beg, to get an original Leica strap and original M-mount cap with it  !

Ok - enough OT - next post has a picture in it … promise.

Thanks, for the info. I was already looking at A&A Bags and i like them a lot. I will probably be packing an M6 with a lens, lightmeter a couple of films and from time to time a 5D with a 50mm. I'm just having a hard time deciding between the "Oskar's One Day Bag", the "Evans Walker" and the "Penn's Pad & Pencil Satchel". There seems to be no huge size difference... Even though the flap on the Oskar seems to be a little more protective in rain, i really like the slim look of the "Penn's...". I guess it comes down to personal preference and i might just have to risk ordering one.

Thanks for helping me decide! Sorry to intrude on the MP Thread. Keep those beautiful cameras coming.

Philipp

EDIT: Oh, and thank you ezc203 i will definately look into those!

Please let's not turn this 2,000+ post thread into yet another mundane bag thread.:o

Already posted but to get the thread back on track with MP photos ... :)
