I purchased a black paint MP in February, 2024, in Hong Kong.  I have been enjoying it but not more so than any Leica I have owned since 1975 when I acquired a CL.  In fact, I remember when the MP first appeared.  I was using an M6TTL at the time and remember thinking all Leica is doing is trying to cash in on nostalgia and it was not worth switching cameras.  I am not sure I was wrong but that is all water under the bridge.

I just finished looking at this whole thread from the beginning.  They are beautiful cameras.  Am surprised at the debate between chrome and black paint owners as to which is a better camera and also surprised at the feeling that an MP is considered almost a piece of jewelry by many of its owners.  Like I said, I enjoy my MP and am in the market for anther film body so will be looking for a chrome M2.  

I am glad that Leica never stopped manufacturing film cameras.  I left my digital stuff back in the USA (except for the Ricoh GR3).  The MP along with 35 and 90 lenses is going around the world with me.  I really enjoy film primarily because it is what I learned on.  I will be 72 in a few weeks and keep thinking I should NOT buy any more cameras.

I just reread the above post and realize I might be wrong about the last sentence.  I will be 72 in less than two weeks but I have a friend whose father is 101 and was a private in the Marines in August, 1942, at Guadalcanal.  He is in assisted living, sharp as a tact, and complains that his 90 year old girl friends cannot keep up with him.  He is my hero and 101 might be a good goal.  

So maybe I should buy another camera.

I cannot imagine anyone taking a piece of sandpaper and mutilates a perfectly good as it gets camera. My MP's did not show any wear at all. The oldest is from 2004. Only a single little dent from falling into the bricks.

Does anyone know if you can swap out the lens release guard on a Leica MP? I think she needs a silver one ;)  Or is it stuck to the shell?

(Silver frame counter window is coming, don't worry)

Yes, you can swap the lens release guard . I've converted a silver MP to black and swapped that part.

I am presently on a tour of Egypt and next week Jordan as I travel around the world.  I have not seen any MP’s (or other Leica film bodies) but have seen two Q3’s.  But having a hard time with all the scanners, not only at an airport but here to go into a temple or pyramid as well as the nicer hotels.  I guess I will see if the scanners affect film.

And I purchased the MP one year ago.  The battery died last week.  I did not know that Leica had added a battery low or dead indicator on the far right in the viewfinder. For the life of me I thought there was a malfunction with the meter.  Replaced batteries and everything back to normal.
