Why I love external EVF of M

Because I can tilt it and look down on in, I can manage with a shorter tripod. In fact I find it quite comfortable focusing and composing looking down in EVF than craning my neck to look through eye level VF when camera is on tripod. Am I in minority or others do not see this as an advantage?

If you take away external EVF then give use tiltable LCD in future M.

A tlltable LCD would be very useful in some circumstances. But it's yet another of those things - I don't want to make movies, so don't press the M button, I don't want to chimp, so don't press play, I don't want to look down on the LCD, so don't tilt the screen - which people refuse to be pragmatic about.

It's one more thing that can break, adds thickness and complexity, and probably Leica will charge you for it. It doesn't fit with the M philosophy either. If the SL had one I wouldn't be surprised but an M has to remain as basic and simple as possible.

I like the tiltable EVF, or better, I need it, because I take a large fraction of my photos "looking down".

A tiltable LCD is not a replacement for a tiltable EVF, in my opinion. I never had one, but I think it would be a useful addition for me in some photographic situations (above-head shots, close-up shots, "secret shots" with camera held at waist level).

Best regards, Gerd

I don't agree.

Simple, yes.

Basic, no.

Anyway, I don't think too many people complained about the old optical Visoflex arrangements with all its complicated variety of bits and pieces and attachments that were anything but simple. No philosophical conflict there, so why should a simple detachable viewfinder now cause angst?

Not the EVF, it's the LCD we're discussing. Nothing wrong that you like the tiltable variety, we all have different tastes and shooting styles. Anyhow I don't think Leica has any plans to introduce a new M with tilting LCD. It doesn't go well with das Wesentliche motto, in my opinion.

Swivel tilt screen ARE amazing. Loved them on many various Canons. Those that criticize haven't used them...fabulous.

But won't happen with an M. Doesn't matter though, no camera does everything.

all best..

I have used a swivel tilt screen for discreet shooting from the front row of a small musical recital, but you need a silent shutter as well.

OTOH I have never got on with the EVF tilted: looking through a VF in the wrong direction confuses me.

Having learned photography on a Rollei, looking down at a screen feels completely natural to me. It's seeing things the right way round left-to-right that takes some getting used to!

There are some real advantages to waist level shooting in some situations, and even the ability to shoot at ground-level without getting down on your stomach. I suppose a remote-control app does almost the same but it's not quite such a fluid operation. A tiltable screen is a good option to have. Same goes for an EVF too.

I can however see why a tiltable screen could feel incongruous on an M and perhaps compromise it's build integrity. Not so a detachable EVF though.

Not only that; it would probably add some thickness as well.

I like the EVF for several reasons (carry only one small finder with multiple wide focal lengths, shoot extreme closeups with 50/90 and OUFRO tubes or a screw-in closeup lens, use of adapted non-RF lenses) but the short tripod thing isn't one of them unless you mean a really short tripod, like almost at ground level.  Otherwise I just can squat  a little and use the OVF just fine.

The forthcoming Fuji GFX will feature a tilting screen as well as a detachable EVF with optional tilting mechanism.  The camera will obviously be much bigger than an M, but in part that's due to its MF sensor.  The controls, however, will be 'old school'....ISO dial, aperture ring, shutter dial, etc.  Those who don't like those aspects will likely favor the Hasselblad X1D.

Where an external EVF could shine is if it were upgradable, allowing for choices and improvements without switching bodies. But that's probably easier said than done (see M240).  My M240 EVF mostly sits in a drawer since I prefer RF photography....but having the choice is what I like about the external design.

There are already choices galore in photography these days (including many variations on the M, film and digital)....and more to come from many manufacturers.

Most traveler type tripods are short and you can't raise it to eye level without using center column. I am in the market for a tripod and realized that a traveler sized tripod works wonderfully without center column due to tiltable EVF.

(Edit: Agree about the ground level macro)
