Jodad Posted December 11, 2016 Share #1 Posted December 11, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) Like the title says. I dont want something like a leather case but rather something like that roll of clear plastic sticky stuff that you could put on school books etc. Im also thinking that i remember reading somewhere that most tapes can leave a stain on chrome leicas after its been on for a while. something like this: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B000TBYL46 p.s. i hope im allowed to post links to other sites. If not, apologies.
Advertisement Posted December 11, 2016 Posted December 11, 2016 Hi Jodad, Take a look here Does anyone make a protective all over camera "sticker". I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!

pico Posted December 12, 2016 Share #3 Posted December 12, 2016 There's an eBay seller that has clear, nonadhesive wraps for various Leicas. I bought two. They work. Dunno if he's still online.
250swb Posted December 12, 2016 Share #4 Posted December 12, 2016 Tape on chrome cameras doesn't leave a stain so you should be OK with the clear film. What people see is an area of very clean chrome (or paint) where their finger grease has been removed, so it just takes a few days to blend in again after the tape has been removed. spydrxx Posted December 12, 2016 Share #5 Posted December 12, 2016 To me the whole concept is like putting plastic covers on fine furniture. Not sure why you would want to put plastic cover on camera....it could trap moisture, which could have a deleterious effect, unless it was an osmosis based plastic. jaapv Posted December 12, 2016 Share #7 Posted December 12, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) Well the stuff should be all right on chrome, but as soon as you start sticking it onto plastic or leatherette you might run into trouble. It appears to me that the handling will deteriorate with the slippery plastic too.
earleygallery Posted December 12, 2016 Share #8 Posted December 12, 2016 There was an ad on the forum for 'skins' made from self adhesive film - you could get a number of effects such as wood grain! I can't remember who they were but maybe the ad will pop up again.

vanGeist Posted December 12, 2016 Share #12 Posted December 12, 2016 I worked in the advertisment business a long time and I can not recommend cheap self-adhesive vinyl film. Especially on Leica cameras! These cheap films will leave at least glue and sticky areas on the surface of your camera when you remove them. Have fun cleaning your Leica camera with alcohol and thinner. Even very expensive professional vinyl film like Avery 900 reacts somehow with the surface of a Leica. I tested this once with the bottom plate of my M7 and had to polish it, in order to remove some marks. It was not glue but the vinyl film left some marks there. And don't put damn duct tape on any camera.
arno_nyhm Posted December 12, 2016 Share #13 Posted December 12, 2016 wow, what an idea. protecting an M-Leica with scotchtape. why did nobody think of this in the last 60 years? how many leicas could still be in mint condition?? *shakehead*

pico Posted December 12, 2016 Share #18 Posted December 12, 2016 I worked in the advertisment business a long time and I can not recommend cheap self-adhesive vinyl film. Especially on Leica cameras! These cheap films will leave at least glue and sticky areas on the surface of your camera when you remove them. Have fun cleaning your Leica camera with alcohol and thinner. Some half-considered applications are likely to do that. The 'skin' post shows only a top plate, bottom, other easy applications. I would stay away from those. FWIW the skin site suggests that the buyer cover white lettering with a Saran wrap-like thing to avoid lifting off the white lettering. Totally unacceptable, however restoring the lettering is trivial compared to ungunking the surface. Gosh only knows what happens to, for example, a black enamel surface. Thanks for your contribution .
250swb Posted December 13, 2016 Share #19 Posted December 13, 2016 I worked in the advertisment business a long time and I can not recommend cheap self-adhesive vinyl film. A nice intellectual jump from working in the advertisement business to glue,............ but what about all the stickers and clear protective film Leica stick to their chrome and black paint cameras? If Leica used 'expensive' glues it wouldn't all squidge out from underneath the stickers over the course of time, I suspect they buy it from a cow rendering factory in China. I should just remind people that even after many years when the stickers from the base of the camera are removed or fall off there is no damage to the chrome or paint. vanGeist Posted December 13, 2016 Share #20 Posted December 13, 2016 A nice intellectual jump from working in the advertisement business to glue,............I'm sorry, I don't get it. How do you think how stuff like this http://www.forster.at/uploads/tx_templavoila/Fahrzeugbeschriftung2_01.jpg keeps on the airplane? Self-adhesive vinyl film containing a thin layer of a material called glue. but what about all the stickers and clear protective film Leica stick to their chrome and black paint cameras? If Leica used 'expensive' glues it wouldn't all squidge out from underneath the stickers over the course of time, I suspect they buy it from a cow rendering factory in China. I should just remind people that even after many years when the stickers from the base of the camera are removed or fall off there is no damage to the chrome or paint. There are different types of adhesives for different applications. The range goes from less to very sticky and there are different types of adhesives for different surface types. If you peel of the protective sticker from a Leica baseplate, you will have some trouble to put it back on with the same binding power like before. (At least mine did.) That's a pretty good sign for a good protective sticker with less agressive glue.
