jaapv Posted November 17, 2016 Share #1 Posted November 17, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) Nikon used to make Medical Nikkor (first 200 mm, later a more practical 120 4.0, with built in ring flash.) Great for (my) professional use, but a wonderful Macro tool as well, as it went to 1:1 @35 cm,(and 2:1 @ 26 cm with macro attachment lens) Now how about a Medical Macro-Elmar-T 90 mm with built-in ring-LED or - dare I hope? a Macro-Medical X? Rationale: APS-C is best, more DOF, 90 mm on APS gives a natural perspective at close-up distances high MP not needed, the target use is illustrations of scientific papers and Powerpoints, They already have the optics of the Macro-Elmar 90 M. For the LED flash, in this use a GN between 8 and 16 is ample. On FF one would need 135 as distance must be maintained for hygiene and photographing during operations. The niche market is considerable: Universities, hospitals, medical practioners like surgeons, ophtalmologists and dentists, none of whom would care about a Leica price tag, and of course macro-enthusiastic amateurs. OK, Leica, what are you waiting for? I would be the first in line to buy one. In fact I'd happily betatest one

IkarusJohn Posted November 17, 2016 Share #6 Posted November 17, 2016 Better in SL mount, surely ...
jaapv Posted November 17, 2016 Author Share #7 Posted November 17, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) Possibly, but for medical work 90 mm on FF is too short. In SL mount it would need to be something like an 135. The files out of the SL would be overkill for the use. A T mount with APS-C crop on the SL would do fine. On the workfloor an X-Medical would be a most attractive proposition. At the moment the only option is the Shofu Eyespecial. Second rate lens, small-sensor12 MP, noisy images, sideflashes instead of ring, insufficient contrast for beamers and at an obscene price -3000 $ for essentially a 100$ point-and-shoot in a weird shape. Sandokan Posted December 9, 2016 Share #11 Posted December 9, 2016 Leica already earn a fortune from Dentists with this hobby - BTW I would love to see which cameras are most owned by Dentists with photography as their hobby. Now you want to contribute professionally too? As for work cameras. What is the subject ... I am guessing it is teeth in-vivo or in-vitro. Now PPT output is much lower resolution than scientific magazine publication. PPT projectors are at most only 1920x1080 and a 2MP camera is sufficient. Dynamic range and colour fidelity are another issue. Magazine output will require at least 8MP unless they really did cover the page with minimal bleed. Macro magnification is more important. I would guess you are looking for 3x so it fills the APS-C sensor? Field curvature must be flat. R100mm macro comes to mind - dont you allready have one? PS. As you can tell, I have been doing requirements gathering for a 2017 project this week. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
