Hi,

I purchased a Leica M240 with 35mm Summicron ASPH recently. I am not entirely confident about the clip on hood that has come with it. The cap keeps falling off and the hood also comes out occasionally. I don't like that one part of my mind is occupied by the thought that the hood might fall off. I also use a Fuji X100s which has twist on hood and I use a pinch cap with it with no problems at all.

Is it possible to have either a screw on or a twist hood for the Summicron 35 ASPH? Any third party hoods are available?

thanks,

N.Shah

Better place for the hood cap: the bag or the box ;) if you don't want to lose it. But the hood itself has no reason to fall off if you have the right version (12526) and not the previous one (12524) which was made for the 35/2 v4 in the eighties. Otherwise Leica clip-on 12504 and 12585 (or 12585 H) are very nice (pics). Cheap screw-in hoods are also available on e**y.

Yes, I have the 35 v4 pre ASPH and purchased the new version ASPH hood as a spare and the cap stays on much better with this hood, but the hood falls off the lens. There is a very slight difference in the depth of the little tabs that engage the groove in the lens. The 12585 hood works well and looks great. I like to use an Optech micro hood hat as a lens cap.

On my Summicron 35 asph I still use an old plastic clip-on 12524 which is very solid :

My 12524 does fit as well but it is a 30+ y/o hood which has more play than the later 12526. Otherwise 12524 & 12526 hoods have indeed one difference: the nubs of the 12524 don't retain the hood cap because the latter did not exist then. For hood cap lovers, better use the 12526 hood with both 35/2 v4 and 35/2 asph v1 lenses. FWIW.

 Ditto.

I think, similar to lost socks in washing machines, there must be a place where all these lost caps live happily together. :)

I have the 35 Summicron v4 with hood; don't have any issues with it being loose, has never fallen out getting in and out of my camera bag.

I've given up on lens caps; just stick a UV filter on it  ^_^

Looks too new to be honest :D;) Not sure if you show the 12524 hood here. Black button suggests it is a 12526 hood made for 35/2 asph and 28/2.8 asph but i may be wrong.

My bad!  I was so sure it was a 12524 hood, even thought the button was silver (thought the picture was just showing a reflection); just pulled it out of my bag and checked again and you're correct! 12526 as stated on the hood; fits snug on the 35mm cron v4  ^_^

I have the v4 pre-ASPH and picked up a used 12526 hood so the rubber cap snaps on more snugly, albeit not that much.  I could have accomplished the same thing by taking a file to the rear of the 12524 nubs.  They protrude the same on both hoods, the nubs on the 12526 merely are flat on the rear edge.   Both hoods fit just as firmly on the lens though, neither has ever fallen off.

I also have a v3, and use the 12504 hood with it.  It fits the v4 fine, and is less annoying in the finder due to being vented; however my feeling is the plastic hood is better at hooding stray light.

The 12585 hood does indeed fit and work also, and when I'm trying for maximum compactness I have taken just one 12585 for use on my 35, 50 and 90mm.  The only issue with the 35mm is the hood can't be reversed over the lens, as it bumps into the focusing tab before it can click into place.

You are absolutely right about the play of the 12524 on the Summicron 35. I just bought an type 11882 Summicron which came with the 12524 attached, which has longitudinal play. Gladly I found a 12526 which i just ordered. Unfortunately the hood cap 14034 is no longer available according to Mr. Hausmann from Leica. I will use a B+W 007 Clear Filter and forget about the cap.

Play depends only on  wear and tear in my latest experience. I've acquired recently a mint 35/2 v4 with 12524 hood and the latter has no more play than my 12526 hood on both that very lens and my 35/2 asph v1. As for hood caps, there were none for the True Leica Man ;) in the eighties and my 14043 remains in the pouch or the bag generally. Happy snaps with your Summicron :).
