KariP Posted November 8, 2016 Share #1  Posted November 8, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) As it's been written the original lens shade is a little big for the camera bag and might also annoy people when shooting candid (street). The original hood is not any bigger than need be - checked it with the apparatus below (some claim it might be).  I decided to make a smaller one, the petal type. I ordered two 82mm metal lens hoods of different lengths (35 and 20 mm). To be able to determine what to take off the hood one needs to use counter light rays: light-up sensor area shines to inside of the shade. The light part needs to be taken out.  Welcome, dear visitor! As registered member you'd see an image here… Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members!  You start with tightening the filter, make a mark to rim. Tighten the hood and mark the same spot. This will be the accurate position of the hood.   Then you make a body dummy: 20 mm flange back distance with concentric openings for lens mount and a rectangular one to act as sensor opening for the light rays.   Here's the set up: strong light source, body mock up, lens, lens shade with white paper fitted tight inside (with marked position on the rim!) And for the curious: yes, I know some Chinese  ... we were in HK / Shenzhen at the Haima typhoon week as some others on this forum... didn't see any other Leica-photographers, though.   Here you can see the shape of the lit area. Be sure to take care the lens center marking matches the position of the sensor opening (=the lens may not be at a wild angle). Turn the lens around 180 deg and use the average of the two lines (because there is some tolerance in this set up).   This is your "cut along this line" model. Gives more shade than without any but is smaller and less scary than the original.   The 90-280 is OK with the 20mm one without any work.    Now these both lenses fit into my DIY Marimekko camera bag leaving room for flash, filters, clean up set etc and they don't protrude as far up as they otherwise would. It happens to be bigger in diameter than the lens barrel and if used with a protective filter it causes vignetting. I didn't start sawing it because of the diameter 'cause I wanted something sleek. It arrived in just 4 days, and is of very nice quality, all metal, screws in just fine. Tests with the hood on two lenses, my Leica 24-90 and my Zeiss C/Y 28-85 show no dark corners. I'll probably buy a second one from the same people as it really is nice quality and you can't beat the price. Welcome, dear visitor! wlaidlaw Posted December 9, 2016 Share #12  Posted December 9, 2016 Robert,  I use that hood on my CZ Contax 28-85 on my M240. Whereas I agree it does not vignette at 28mm, I am far from convinced it provides enough flare protection at longer focal lengths. It may just be that the excellent flare resistance of the Leica 24-90 (with its original hood) makes other, even high quality lenses, seem flare prone by comparison.  Wilson Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

wlaidlaw Posted December 10, 2016 Share #14  Posted December 10, 2016 Robert,  I have the Contax equivalent sitting somewhere in a cupboard/drawer/shelf but life is too short to be changing hoods, as you zoom. With the Contax 28-85 you also of course, cannot fit a petal hood, since the front of the lens rotates as you focus (the only downside of their otherwise brilliant one touch "trombone" zoom/focus ring).
