M6 Horizontal Light Leak

Hi all,

First time here, thanks in advance for any help or insights you provide!

I recently purchased a Leica M6 —in what appeared to be mint condition. I ran through the standard checklist of items and it passed with flying colours. Unfortunately it was purchased from someone on Craigslist, and there's always a risk there.

I got my first rolls of film developed, and it looks like there's a fairly significant light leak coming through. See below, a horizontal band that runs across the lower third of the photo:

Has anyone here seen this issue before, or have any ideas as to what could be causing it?

Any advice and/or insights would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Andrew

First, welcome to the forum!

Just curious, did this occur on all the rolls you put through, or just the one?  I'm just trying to eliminate the possibility of the light leak source being the film canister itself and not the camera.

I don't think I've ever seen a light leak like that on a Leica. The intensity seems too even to happen in camera. If you look at the negatives, is it in between frames too?  All the frames or just these two?  O just visible in the shadows?

Where could it come from?

If it is in between frames too then it has come from the back. More likely out of the camera as I can't think of how it could happen so evenly.

If it is not between frames then it has come from through the lens and not out of the camera. Again, I can't see how it could be so even.

We need more info to give you more advice.

I would suspect an issue during processing or possibly scanning.

As already asked, what do the negs look like?

Light leaks on an M are usually from shutter bounce (vertical strip on edge of frame), pinholes in the shutter curtain (bright spots on frames) or leaks through the viewfinder (irregular areas of overexposure).

Start a process of elimination.
