I've had no luck on finding one store that has this amazing lens in stock, for those of you who got yours, did you pre-order?

The announcement mentioned "special order" without saying what that meant. I emailed my shop asking them to get one for me. When I picked it up, they had two - mine and one for their display.

I found mine in stock at a provincial UK dealer.

Anyway you have to pre-order paying 20% at order and the rest at delivery. It seems Leica build one each order they get. I had the chance to try one while the lens was still in the store waiting to be delivered to another customer. Ordered it as soon as I saw the pictures on my computer. I had mine in one week.

I disagree. HCB's soul divided by all Leica lenses, past and future, makes for an extremely small quantity of soul per lens. Just enough for magic to operate. Or at least on a psychological level.

I'm surprised that the shop let you try the lens seeing how that they had sold it to someone else.

That means that the customer received goods that had already been opened and used.

I would be unhappy if it was my lens.

Yes. The shop should have informed the buyer, and if the buyer still wanted it, reduced the price.

Maybe it was a lens they had in the shop. I know that when i got back to buy it it was gone and had to order mine.

Interesting. I remember when I first started buying Leica lenses about 15 years ago it was perfectly normal (or it seemed it to me) to go into the retailer and, if I was interested in a lens, to ask to see the actual lens in the box, try it on the camera, etc. After I'd played around focussing it and twiddling the aperture ring a few times (or, later when I had an M8, taken a few test shots in the shop), the dealer would then carefully put it back in the plastic bag, into the box and back on the shelf. I did that numerous times over the years and it never occurred to me (or the dealer, I suspect) that anyone who subsequently bought that lens would feel short changed somehow. Nowadays it seems that, unless the lens box is still sealed inside the outer plain cardboard box, it has been sullied and should no longer considered new.

Yes, it appears that the dealer cared more for future sales than being protective of his customer's property.  Having said that, generally speaking an item is not used until it has been sold in retail - demonstrations do not cause an item to be legally used.  This of course depends on the location. Nevertheless, using it as a demonstrator should have entitled the owner (hmmm.....probably not really the owner until possession is taken) to a partial rebate.  I suspect this is all rather complicated in contract law. I think the least a dealer should do is ask the owner if (s)he doesn't mind their property being used by others.

I though that demonstration lenses were sent out to dealers precisely for that purpose.

First of all, "your lens" is yours as from the moment you pay for it. Not before.

 

And I don't see Leica sending out 1000 units to dealers that are meant to be sold at a discount, and no dealer is crazy to have one of each lens in stock as a demo that has to be sold as a discount. Nobody is stupid.

 

And this leica ownership thing is almost a disease among some people. No, a Leica lens is not a magical device, and yes, it is made to be used.

And? Still applies to the demo thing...

 

I agree that a paid-for lens should be tucked away. But I can't disagree with the dealer showing it to a serious customer in hoped for a deposit. They need to make a living, and I don't consider myself such a pita as to block them.

I paid a deposit for mine and the balance on collection.

Seeing many brick and mortar camera shops close due to demanding and ungrateful customers (demo in store, buy on internet), I will be more kind to the camera shop.

Demanding yep, ungrateful I don't think so.... loyalty works both ways, its all about service.

I can't imagine any shops not being nice to the customers and do well in the long run. This is independent of online vs brick and mortar shop. I am sure these Leica shops will lose customers if they continue treating poorly.

 

As customers there is no harm in being demanding (it is our hard earned money btw), however we should recognize the extra service (compared to online shops) they provide, often at no extra cost to online prices.
