An excerpt from Puts' recent blog post....

".....I will start a lengthy test procedure with the new Summaron 5.6/28, the current compact Elmarit 2.8/28 and the current 1.4/28. I will test the lenses on the MM-2 and on film. For the film I have selected the Ilford XP2 Super, a very fine grained emulsion with an extended dynamic range, I am very curious about the results."

Although I am a fan of Erwins, I am not sure what he is testing with the Summaron - especially in b&w. Be interesting. Here's a colour conversion.

I saw someone complaining on FB that they couldn't get their files to look right in Lightroom. They'd removed the vignette, converted to b&w and dodged and burned to the nth degree. Fair enough, personal choice is just that but I think this lens works best with very little editing.

My copy arrived last week, and today first chance to try it on a walk. I will probably have to put in seperate posts, and these are just snaps to show some of the 'character'. All at 5.6 with no hood on M(240), with no lens correction.

Thanks for posting the photographs. I understand the the lens is already listed in the latest M(240) firmware, so if you had automatic lens detection switched on, it's possible that some correction is already dealt with in camera. Such as the pink corners issues that some others have shown.

Argh, seeing these first examples starting to show up, I'm already getting impatient to get mine now... and I had promised myself that I would stay calm  B)

I finally had the chance to briefly try out this lens yesterday. Certainly a nice "thing" (though not quite as 'polished' and inherently desirable as I was anticipating) but I did find it rather fiddly to use. The most significant problem for me (and the reason why I'm holding off for the moment) is that, with ISO 200 film in my camera, I found myself at 1/30-1/50 wide open at 2pm in the afternoon and as much as I might try to convince myself that isn't going to be a problem (after all, photographers many years ago had to make do with ISO 25 and 50 and lenses that were often no faster than F3.5) I suspect I may find myself regretting buying this lens. I think I have been underestimating how often I probably find myself shooting at F2.8-4 on winter days though it shouldn't really come as a surprise – one of the reasons I sold my original Tri-Elmar many years ago was after feeling constrained by F4 and uncomfortably slow shutter speeds using Kodachrome 200 on grey winter days. All that said, a part of me likes to make my life deliberately awkward, so I haven't ruled the Summaron out yet :D . I suspect I may try it out again tomorrow (which is forecast to be sunny) and see how it fares with the sun in and around the frame.

It would look wonderful on a silver chrome M-A...

Anyway to my question... a bit silly really but here goes. I suppose there needs to be a firmware update for the M9 to manage in-camera corrections, does Leica still support the older Ms in this regard ?

To answer my own question the new firmware for the M9 is here:

M9/M9-P/M-E Firmware Version 1.210 M Monochrom Firmware Version 1.016

The following improvements are included in these firmware updates:

Support of the new lens:

Leica Summaron-M 28 mm f/5.6

Hello,

I am very happy with the old summaron 28 f5.6 from 1960. It is very compact and works really well on all Leica Ms, including the Leica M240. The only limitation is that I can not do some LV with it, as the camera detects no lens. I wonder if the new one will be any better, as it has the same formula. I have already seen the prices on ebay for an old one going up (up to 1000€ already).

best regards.

Dominique

I have no experience with this lens but the fact that it is not recognized by the camera does not prevent the latter from working with it in LV/EVF mode i believe. Am i missing something?

If you use an LTM to M adaptor with no indent, you can use Live View. Avoid using the infinity lock with this adaptor. This is not an issue with a wide- angle which does not need to be turned all of the way to be sharp to infinity. Leica should have produced the new lens as an LTM with an adaptor mount with six bit coding and an indent but they chose to produce in an M mount only.

Wjere is the serial number of the screw mount Summeron 28mm lens located?  Thanks for your help.

Here... one of the most difficult to spot, indeed... ;)

With this kind of adapter, youhave no problem with infinity lock and LV/EF on M240... but of course you must set manual lens setting, or lens recognition off.

( even if is someway unpleasant to leave the sensor code strip "air open"...)

That's not kind of you Adam, you're responsible for my family starving for a while, since tomorrow morning I'm going to buy that lens...

Will have to feed them bread and water for some time.

Thank you for showing your great series of pictures.
