Because photography and reprography are not the same thing with respect B). Sharpness is only one feature of lenses among others. The character of a lens is more interesting provided we don't spend our time trying to hide the flaws of the lens, e.g. flare and vignetting here, as those are such flaws which give the lens it's character in the first place. Same for the glow produced by lenses like Summilux 35/1.4 to take another example. All the charm of the lens lies in that glow.

As previously mentioned, I have an old 28mm Summaron in great shape and coded.  While its size is a potential virtue (street shooting/or riding in a lens case on a camera strap) the fall off is extreme; uncorrected wide open (sounds strange, wide open at F:/5.6),  it yields a fairly  distinct circle of usability. Even at F11 with 6-dot compensation it is not really practical for landscape work. While I am one of the many victims of frequent nostalgia attacks, I see very  limited use for the lens, particularly when priced at USD $2400+.  I have no criticism of the super photos offered to justify the lens by others; great photographers can function with mediocre equipment and yield awesome results as shown by the great photographers of the yesteryear. Regards, Ron

The aperture ring is a little fiddly but I leave it mostly wide open. As for focusing it's very convenient. I use one gloved finger, push down on the top to keep the catch open and move it where you want it.

I ended up doing that (without the glove) but it doesn't feel right to be pushing perpendicular to the main direction of travel nor does it feel very precise when using it like that (which I suppose is missing the point of an F5.6 28mm lens :D ). Still, I've decided to persevere with my interest in this lens and have one winging it's way to me. I hope it's as good optically as the one I'd demoed.

Our big red bridge is being widened and refreshed. I took this snap with the Summaron-M 1:5.6/28. There is a blue/orange rings effect in the anti-suicide fence just left of centre. Is it an optical or digital artefact? (crop to follow) This full size version shows a moiré pattern but it doesn't appear to be coloured.

Here is the crop with edit controls flat. The coloured rings only show up in Lightroom when I zoom in. The moiré effect above only appears in the reduced sized jpeg export.

The colour moire is a Bayer interpolation thing. I don't think the non-colour moire is JPEG compression related (I don't think the compression works that way) but more likely either again sensor/interpolation related or a product of image downsampling (pixel size rather than file size compression).

Either way the moire is a testament to the sharpness of this lens.

C1 does a good job at reducing moiré. Doesn't eliminate it completely though (100% crop).

Been trying the lens out on my M7 for some street work. The image below was shot on Tri-X (developed and scanned by Ilford) at 2:30 pm on a very dull London day at 1/60 @ F5.6. It was shot at the minimum focusing distance and cropped a tad...

AFAIK they never intended to produce them in numbers, only to order.

Yes, Leica are marketing the lens as a build-to-order item – 10% deposit with an authorised dealer and wait. That said, I bought mine from a regional dealer that just happened to have it in stock and I think one or two other forum members have done likewise.
