Exodies Posted January 15, 2017 Share #481 Posted January 15, 2017 Advertisement (gone after registration) The aperture ring is a little fiddly but I leave it mostly wide open. As for focusing it's very convenient. I use one gloved finger, push down on the top to keep the catch open and move it where you want it.
Advertisement Posted January 15, 2017 Posted January 15, 2017 Hi Exodies, Take a look here Leica Summaron-28 -image thread. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Guest Posted January 17, 2017 Share #482 Posted January 17, 2017 Because photography and reprography are not the same thing with respect . Sharpness is only one feature of lenses among others. The character of a lens is more interesting provided we don't spend our time trying to hide the flaws of the lens, e.g. flare and vignetting here, as those are such flaws which give the lens it's character in the first place. Same for the glow produced by lenses like Summilux 35/1.4 to take another example. All the charm of the lens lies in that glow.No Industar in your collection? Ronazle Posted January 17, 2017 Share #484 Posted January 17, 2017 As previously mentioned, I have an old 28mm Summaron in great shape and coded. While its size is a potential virtue (street shooting/or riding in a lens case on a camera strap) the fall off is extreme; uncorrected wide open (sounds strange, wide open at F:/5.6), it yields a fairly distinct circle of usability. Even at F11 with 6-dot compensation it is not really practical for landscape work. While I am one of the many victims of frequent nostalgia attacks, I see very limited use for the lens, particularly when priced at USD $2400+. I have no criticism of the super photos offered to justify the lens by others; great photographers can function with mediocre equipment and yield awesome results as shown by the great photographers of the yesteryear. Regards, Ron
wattsy Posted January 19, 2017 Share #485 Posted January 19, 2017 The aperture ring is a little fiddly but I leave it mostly wide open. As for focusing it's very convenient. I use one gloved finger, push down on the top to keep the catch open and move it where you want it. I ended up doing that (without the glove) but it doesn't feel right to be pushing perpendicular to the main direction of travel nor does it feel very precise when using it like that (which I suppose is missing the point of an F5.6 28mm lens ). Still, I've decided to persevere with my interest in this lens and have one winging it's way to me. I hope it's as good optically as the one I'd demoed.
Exodies Posted January 21, 2017 Share #486 Posted January 21, 2017 Our big red bridge is being widened and refreshed. I took this snap with the Summaron-M 1:5.6/28. There is a blue/orange rings effect in the anti-suicide fence just left of centre. Is it an optical or digital artefact? (crop to follow) This full size version shows a moiré pattern but it doesn't appear to be coloured. Welcome, dear visitor! Exodies Posted January 21, 2017 Share #487 Posted January 21, 2017 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) Here is the crop with edit controls flat. The coloured rings only show up in Lightroom when I zoom in. The moiré effect above only appears in the reduced sized jpeg export. Welcome, dear visitor! lct Posted January 21, 2017 Share #488 Posted January 21, 2017 Just moiré at first glance. I can check with C1 if you put your raw file in a dropbox.

Exodies Posted January 21, 2017 Share #491 Posted January 21, 2017 I suppose the coloured moiré is something that happened in the sensor and the light and dark one is a result of jpeg compression.
wattsy Posted January 21, 2017 Share #492 Posted January 21, 2017 The colour moire is a Bayer interpolation thing. I don't think the non-colour moire is JPEG compression related (I don't think the compression works that way) but more likely either again sensor/interpolation related or a product of image downsampling (pixel size rather than file size compression). Either way the moire is a testament to the sharpness of this lens.
lct Posted January 24, 2017 Share #493 Posted January 24, 2017 C1 does a good job at reducing moiré. Doesn't eliminate it completely though (100% crop). Welcome, dear visitor! Exodies Posted January 24, 2017 Share #494 Posted January 24, 2017 (edited) Is that a specific moiré filter or a coloured fringe filter? The coloured moiré has gone but the light and dark one is still there. I must return to the scene with different lenses Edited January 24, 2017 by Exodies
lct Posted January 25, 2017 Share #495 Posted January 25, 2017 Just a moiré tool desaturating colored fringes AFAIK. Hard to avoid with cameras sans AA filter. Only ways i'm aware of are to use a softer lens or to focus behind or in front of the moiré pattern.
Ted Lemon Posted January 25, 2017 Share #496 Posted January 25, 2017 Been trying the lens out on my M7 for some street work. The image below was shot on Tri-X (developed and scanned by Ilford) at 2:30 pm on a very dull London day at 1/60 @ F5.6. It was shot at the minimum focusing distance and cropped a tad... B-A-C Posted January 28, 2017 Share #498 Posted January 28, 2017 Has Leica actually produced these in numbers yet? I looked today and they're unavailable anywhere. Perhaps they're doing very well for a $2,500 f5.6 lens.
ianman Posted January 28, 2017 Share #499 Posted January 28, 2017 AFAIK they never intended to produce them in numbers, only to order.
wattsy Posted January 28, 2017 Share #500 Posted January 28, 2017 AFAIK they never intended to produce them in numbers, only to order. Yes, Leica are marketing the lens as a build-to-order item – 10% deposit with an authorised dealer and wait. That said, I bought mine from a regional dealer that just happened to have it in stock and I think one or two other forum members have done likewise.
