DATES

Ah, yes thanks stray cat. (your dinner res. noted)

The Challenge will be held on April 8, post lunch, which will probably be at Young & Jacksons pub, from midday to whenever.

Even if you don't have lunch (not obligatory), you should appear so as to sign on and declare your 'weapons'.

DINNER

The Official Dinner will be the evening of April 8, around 7:45pm. Location to be confirmed late March, after I have locked in number of attendees and confirmed with the restaurant.

On April 7, time to still to be determined, but it will be AM, a visit to Camera Clinic in Collingwood. It's a10min tram ride from the city. We will discuss timing for meeting to catch tram and arrival at CC, after I lock it in with Nicki @ CC. More on this closer to the time. We will consider lunch afterwards, nearby. Already had some good suggestions for venues.

On April 6, I am proposing to guide a general wander around laneways and precinct of the CBD, to include Michael's Camera Store Museum and photography exhibition. Could also include the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) one of my favourite haunts for shooting. Two locations for that. That can all be ad lib as it is always there and free. Photography permitted in most areas.

Also there is China Town, may be most photogenic at night, maybe coupled with dining in that precinct. Just ideas.

The NGV is also one of my favourites,

What's a photo forum without more photos?

Erl, I'm still finalising what time to fly down on Thursday, afternoon or evening.

I have to work Thursday day.  However I can finish early enough to be down and ready for the evening if you have any activities planned.  If there's nothing on that late then I'll just come down on a late flight so I'm ready for Friday morning.

Regards,

Mark

UPDATE

So far I have counted 21 attendees for the competition and 18 registering for the Official Dinner.

I am having technical difficulties posting my spreadsheet listing the attendees and their companions for dinner. The forum won't accept a PDF copy, or the 'copy/paste' of my spreadsheet.

Any advice out there on how to drop a simple list into the thread?

The following attachment is a PDF, but requires viewers to download it. Not very satisfactory.

Please correct me on any omissions (I'll bet there are some!)

Hi John, Just checked the pdf for dinner attendees - confirming it's JRBelmuda and elliebelle - Thank you :)

Hello,

Keen to join! How to register for this event?

Cheers,

Basically be in Melbourne on April 8, 2017 and be at the appointed place around midday that day to register. The meeting place is (probably) about to be changed so stay tuned to this thread for regular updates approaching that date. See my post # 202 above for basic stuff and new info will keep coming. Any other queries, just post them here and you will be answered. All that is for the competition, but early arrivees will be enjoying encounters that I am still arranging, but reading the thread will give a good overview.

I can't say enough how much I love this photo.  Are they your kids?  Or did you catch this moment completely on the fly?

Thanks Lax. Very kind of you.

Mine are a fair bit older, but if I do have other's kids in my photos they are always unidentifiable.

I was waiting for my wife who went to get a bottle of water. The ingredients were starting to come together nicely whilst  waited.  Took about 8 photos and this was by far the pick of the lot.

I am going to get booted off this thread for the 2nd time by the unscrupulous for diverting from the main topic again, but I am extremely uncomfortable photographing children I don't know, and I want to ask you some questions - did you communicate at all with the parents/guardians of these kids?  If I ever took a photo like this, I would really like to give the parents a copy because as a parent, I'm sure this is the kind of photo that they would treasure, have you ever done this?  However, I can also imagine how a parent could misinterpret your intentions.  I have had no issues photographing adults in these types of magic moments though.

UPDATE (2/3/2017)

Just returned from hospital (R hand surgery) and can't use a camera! Typing is very slooow. Apologies for lack of speed.

I have done some further research (pre-hospital) and am very impressed with the Arbory Bar & Eatery (see link below). I tested the food and beer, both excellent! :p  I feel this will be a superior lunch spot, pre-challenge, over Young & Jackson's, and cheaper whilst suiting our purpose better.

The location is very convenient for the majority staying at the Travelodge, short walk across the river, and very pleasant outlook over the Yarra River and Southbank. When i get my hand back, i will post details of the location, but searching this link will tell you all you need to know,

Thanks a lot, John, and very sorry to hear about your hand. Thinking about left-handed photography - maybe a point-and-shoot upside down is an option? If the focusing can be managed, I'm sure everyone would agree about a Hasselblad exception; together with the Rolleiflex TLRs the only cameras I can come up with left-handed shutter release...

All the best

Stefan

My newly refurbed Hassy could work except that it still requires RH focussing!

Hopefully, tomorrow the surgeon will have good news for me re. my time of incapacitation.

By the time of the Challenge, i will have something worked out.

John, regrettably I'll have to pull out of the Challenge. Hopefully there'll be another one in the future. Best wishes for a great event, I know Melbourne won't disappoint in photographic or epicurean delights.
