Hi folks, I have an opportunity to buy a M-240 which is in reasonable condition... EXCEPT the sensor creates photos with a BLUE horizontal line (photo further down)

Does anybody know what I will cost to repair the problem... or is it a simple software/remapping issue?

The sale is about US$3300. It has shutter count of 4300.

Apparently this happened after a long exposure shot.

Advice would be much appreciated.

It could get  very expensive or it could be a free fix on courtesy, depending on the problem Leica finds. If you like the roll of the dice... I suspect it is being sold because the seller has a good reason, for instance knowledge of the price of repair.

I would not pay that much for a camera with a problem. You might be without it for quite a while too. Personally I would walk away from the deal.

I wouldn't buy it either, not unless I knew the seller well and understood the full story.

The chances of missing a bargain are smaller and probably more acceptable than the chances of ending up paying over the odds for a properly-working camera.

If it were very cheap and easy to fix, the owner could get it fixed and then sell it for a full price.

So why haven't they?

Too low a price for that simple an issue IMHO. I would get out of there unless the seller is a pro dealer offering a trusty warranty.

Apparently he doesn't have the time due to travel commitments.

I have scouted ebay and the cheapest i've see which has sold is about 4K (i guess with out problems).

I was hoping somebody had experienced this issue and has dealt with Leica about this.  The threads I have read were repaired under warranty.

Has anybody had a sensor replaced before?

A number of issues come to mind. Leica USA will not extend guaranty to a second owner, if it is grey import they will not touch it at all. That would mean dealing with Leica Wetzlar.

If it is the LCD it will be a costly repair, the whole camera has to be taken apart. If it is the sensor, the repair will be even more costly.

The strange thing is that it runs across both halves of the sensor. Does it show up on the photographs?

Take into account that the repair time will  often run into months.

As for the explanation of the seller, I find it rather thin. Lack of time does not stop anybody from dropping off a parcel in the mail.

Im also surprised the seller has quite confidently advised you that the shutter count is 4300... I am not aware of how I would find the number of shutter actuations on my 240 (M-P)... as far as I was aware, that function has been removed from the menu from the original 240 onwards.

Something doesn't quite feel right about this. I would avoid.

Can you show a photograph of the line? Not the LCD Image..........A real phot?

I have requested for a jpg/raw.

It does show on the pictures and because the line appears on the upper edge he manages to get away with it by cropping it out in post.

Maybe I won't bother with the headache... especially when it's my first Leica

There are plenty of other fish in the ocean... For instance on this forum I see a couple of nice looking ones, one @ 3750 Euro and one @ 3150 GBP. The safest way is of course to go through a reputable dealer who can offer a guaranty.

The fact this owner hasn't had it fixed suggests to me either a) he merely assumes he'd be on the hook for a huge repair bill since the camera is out of warranty; or B) he bought the camera used un-certified from a private seller and Leica wants to charge him for a new sensor and/or motherboard or some very expensive repair.    I might bite on it for $2K but not a cent more, because at $3K a $1200-1500 repair would put you over value.
