Ernstk Posted August 10, 2016 Share #41 Â Posted August 10, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) I love that shop. Â Been AGES since I've been in though. Must be 7 or 8 years. Â I might have to visit next time I'm in London. It's a great place. I bought my 21/2.8 Elmarit from them recently and they gave me an excellent trade in on my 50 Summicron. Â Nice people to deal with and the shop is like an Aladdin's Cave! Â Ernst
Advertisement Posted August 10, 2016 Posted August 10, 2016 Hi Ernstk, Take a look here Some really cheap m-mount glass to play with. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
luigi bertolotti Posted August 10, 2016 Share #42 Â Posted August 10, 2016 I'm also thinking about a 35mm, can anyone recommend one in LTM? Does the Jupiter-12 focus ok on an m? The Jupiter 12 35mm is surely less critical to focus than the 85mm you bought... btw, I had both (35 and 85) at my "Zorky times" (when I approached RF photographing... around 40 years ago... Â ) , and kept the 35 for some time: keep in mind that a honest Summaron 35 3,5 in LTM (A36 version) is easy to find, not so costly, and a very appreciable lens. ralphh Posted August 10, 2016 Author Share #43 Â Posted August 10, 2016 Thanks! Will look at the Summaron. Does the Jupiter-12 fit on the M ok? It doesn't hit the shutter curtains? It looks like it's a pretty deep lens. That would make it very expensive
Ecar Posted August 10, 2016 Share #44 Â Posted August 10, 2016 Thanks! Will look at the Summaron. Does the Jupiter-12 fit on the M ok? It doesn't hit the shutter curtains? It looks like it's a pretty deep lens. That would make it very expensive I once tried a J-12 on an M7, but have no experience with other bodies or other copies of the lens, so don't take my word for it. It just cleared the shutter by a whisker, but the biggest drawback of the lens receding so much was that you couldn't reliably use in-camera light metering (similar to the Super Angulon). It may work with Live View metering, though.
scsambrook Posted August 10, 2016 Share #45 Â Posted August 10, 2016 I've had two J-12 lenses both dating fom the early 1970s and neither of them focused correctly at close distances on my M2 using either Leitz or Voigtlander adapters. One of them was also way out at infinity. I've had three J-8 lenses of similar dates, none of which were accurate at closer ranges and only one correct at infinity when used on both M2 and M8. The one J-9 I owned in FED/Zorki mount had similar problems (but was better optically than the Kiev fitting one of similar vintage that I now have.). They're probably a better bet for use on mirrorless cameras rather than Leicas.
ralphh Posted August 11, 2016 Author Share #46  Posted August 11, 2016 Ok, so my J-9 arrived today.  Ecar I see what you mean about the cam - it back focuses before 3m, then front focuses.  It needs a good CLA anyway - the focus is very stiff, and there's oil on the blades. Assuming they're not up for grinding a new curve on the cam in with the CLA price i'm going to have them set correct focus at 1.4m - been having a play today, trying to compensate for the focus issues (hard, but fun) and that's where it's going to get used.  It's an interesting lens. It's actually pretty sharp wide open, even half way across the frame (see crop below), but very dreamy. Flares like crazy! Welcome, dear visitor! mikemgb Posted August 11, 2016 Share #47  Posted August 11, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) I can see a lot of potential for that lens, I love those photographs!  My J-8 shipped today, I wonder how long it will take to reach the USA from the Russian Federation? I chose one from Russia because I assume it'll be well dosed with performance enhancing drugs and therefore capable of some amazing images.

pico Posted August 11, 2016 Share #50 Â Posted August 11, 2016 There is a member here who corrected the focus error on some Russian lenses using very fine adhesive copper shims. Search perhaps?
ralphh Posted August 12, 2016 Author Share #51  Posted August 12, 2016 I didn't get a hood, no.  I think I'll just embrace the flare!   I did get a hard case for it though, which kinda looks like a plastic bean can with a screw lid and russian writing on the top. Pretty cool  Thanks Pico - I thought of similar - it seems reasonable you could adjust focus by putting thin shims between the lens and mount, but unfortunately it back focuses in the range I plan to use it (around 1.5 m) so it actually needs to get closer into the camera, not further out.  Needs a CLA anyway so no biggie.  Edit1: Oh, maybe on the cam itself?  I'll do a search.  Edit2: Yes, on the cam!  Thanks Pico - now have a project for the weekend.  I wonder if I'm brave enough to take it apart and re-lube it myself too.... hmmm.... then again, as I plan to use it in a really narrow focus range... earleygallery Posted August 12, 2016 Share #52 Â Posted August 12, 2016 It's like a Nocti-Tele lens! Great for more flattering portraits.
Ecar Posted August 12, 2016 Share #53 Â Posted August 12, 2016 If you get tired of the flare effect, suitable hoods are available on the Bay for next to nothing. They help a bit, but the lens+hood combo size gets into DSLR territory.
ralphh Posted August 13, 2016 Author Share #54  Posted August 13, 2016 I have an 85 f1.2 on a 5DIII if I want to carry a big camera  I'm happy without the hood - I really bought this with a narrow set of images in mind - headshots, mostly into the light. It gives me the look I'm after
faurefan Posted September 5, 2016 Share #55 Â Posted September 5, 2016 Good work getting a Jupiter 9. It's an absolutely wonderful lens, as your photos attest. Â I'll put another vote in for the Summaron 35mm f/3.5 LTM. Super compact, sharp and full of character. The only issue is that the aperture ring is on the outside, so moving it changes the focus, but you learn.

jaques Posted September 9, 2016 Share #58 Â Posted September 9, 2016 Probably the cheapest M mount Leica lens available is the Hektor 135mm. These can be had for as little as $100. I think they are definitely worth it.
