Michael Hiles Posted August 1, 2016 Share #1 Posted August 1, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) This is part of the lift mechanism of the Pont Chaban-Delmas over the Garonne River at Bordeaux. This is an impressive lift bridge that allows significant ships into the harbour at Bordeaux. Jacques Chaban-Delmas was a mayor of Bordeaux for 48 years. He had previously been Prime Minister during Georges Pompidou’s government. So they named a serious bridge after him. I always enjoy trying to make a worthwhile picture out of industrial subjects. Sometimes there is a formal beauty in large mechanical things. Welcome, dear visitor! samwells Posted August 1, 2016 Share #2 Posted August 1, 2016 Indeed, there's a sculptural beauty to those forms, almost like Easter Island statues. Nice.
Michael Hiles Posted August 1, 2016 Author Share #3 Posted August 1, 2016 Indeed, there's a sculptural beauty to those forms, almost like Easter Island statues. Nice. Thanks you Sam. I hadn't thought about the statues from Easter Island - but there is the parallel. I had been thinking of Paul Strand who many years ago made beautiful pictures of mechanisms.
