Second camera to a sick M240 - any suggestions?

That could be true, but in the meanwhile I have to attend to a camera that doesn't conform and I have M lenses sitting in a bag that I can't use.

And what gets on my goat is for someone to tell me I know the M240 is a great camera. This faulty M240 i have is my first experience with Leica, so what other conclusion should I draw?

Well, I realize that it is cold comfort, but it is a fact that a case report is not statistically valid. IMO you have had pretty bad luck, and Leica/your dealer should make it right.

I would be thinking exactly as you if I were in your shoes. However, my experience has been the opposite with my digital leicas all bought from eBay. My only problem was a misaligned rangefinder in an M8.2. Since then I've owned 3 M9s (seemingly a much more problematical camera than the M240) with no issues and I now have an M-P which seems a vastly more sorted model than the M9. I'm not keen on digital cameras but this M-P is really something so I find myself thinking I'd like a second body or a Q. This is quite the opposite to your thinking. I usually travel with film Ms and once a new to me MP let me down in Cuba 10 days into the trip. The clutch tightened making film transport impossible. An easy fix and I know the vast majority of Film Ms are reliable. I think you should seek that replacement M240 and be done with your lemon.

IMHO if the original Poster feels so inclined, then he should step away from Leica. No amount of persuasion will sweeten the given situation.. Sell it, move on, be happy...I had 2 Lemons (VW & Genesis) after getting 2 new replacement vehicles I immediately sold them, moved on.. Not being able to trust any product = Unhappiness..

Thanks Edward, yes I'm on the case with the supplying dealer, who in turn have contacted Leica Mayfair who are supposed to be contacting Leica. I don't want the camera repaired and returned to me, I want a new M240 and will fight my case if it comes to it.

I am aware that Leica read the forum so it will not be a surprise to them when Mayfair Leica get in touch, if they haven't already.

My M240 (fast approaching three years) has been faultless, as was its M9 predecessor for the three years I had it.  My M7 experience was completely different - after its fourth trip to Solms/Wetzlar I had a complete sense of humour failure and CS replaced it with a new one.  Hopefully CS will take similar action in your case.

Sorry here too.  I've been shooting M's for about 45 yrs, am a long time pro - used to shoot 4x5 architectural etc.  The 240 is everything I've ever wanted.  Most people here on the Forum are devotees:  form factor & lenses espec

Two M240s, one demo one pre-owned-certified, zero issues.  Before I bought the second one, my backup was a Sony Nex-6, which I still own.   It has a crop factor but plays well with all Leica and CV lenses, wide or otherwise.  I'm guessing but I would think you could pick one up along with a decent M adapter for $200 or less by now.

7 months, 12,000 frames, no problems with my previously owned M240.  Sorry to hear of your difficulties. Personally I'm spending most of my nervous energy trying to stop myself from buying a Monochrom at least until the next gen M is announced. But if the experience has just been too bitter and you were to avoid a second M version as a backup, I'd suggest you consider what attributes beyond accepting M glass are important to you and which might be deal breakers.  Obviously there are dozens of choices for bodies that accept adapters for M glass.  In my own thought process I did consider some form of A7 might be interesting and doubly useful if augmented with a few of its own native lenses. But I find myself swayed by the notion that making worthwhile photographs requires a bit of a love affair with your equipment and for various reasons, I find Sony cameras impossible to love.   One can certainly find reasonable alternatives to an M that add an extra measure of reliability and flexibility, but in the end they too involve a set of compromises you have to be willing to accept.

Great news!

As one contemplating a Leica digital, it's reassuring to know at least some dealers will stand behind the product they promote :)

Here in the UK we have protection under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 (this law was introduced on the 1st October 2015). In summary, if a product becomes defective in the first 12 months, and after one attempt at repair or replacement, if the defect recurs, the customer has the right to reject the item, or ask for a replacement. Any reputable retailers will not want to get entangled with the law, for obvious reasons, and will offer a replacement.

Great news, I really do hope the new one is better.

I would find it very upsetting to have my Leica constantly being fixed as it's my daily camera.  I love it but an experience like this would sour the relationship very quickly for me.
