Osprey And The Moon

I wrote more but it never posted. I'll try again. In 2003 we were all posting digitally with our D-1s. Then, we all bought D-2s for $2,500. We helped each other with this new technology. When M showed up some of us were left in the dust. Now the forum is class oriented. Such is life.

..... and I think the tendency to post images under the specific camera subsection has also eaten into posts in the photo section ...... there is probably more images posted on the Leica Q thread daily than here ....... and most are excellent.

I had no idea the Q image thread was so active because I never look at it. I just did and you're right. There are some fantastic images posted there. Maybe that's the crux of the problem. Too many separate places to post. I'm not sure what the solution is but I'm glad we're talking about it. Perhaps the camera specific sections should be for technical discussion only and not be used for posting images. Why should we not see Q images posted next to DL109, VL114, M, SL and various others? That makes for interesting comparisons and would really highlight the strengths and weaknesses of the various systems.

Thanks Mark and Sam.

Mark, I was originally behind the Osprey but walked underneath it until I could get into a position to get it from the front and also include the moon. It was about 7 meters above me.

Oh shit. Sorry I hit the Thanks button for your post.

Or should I have posted a critique ... :p

That's exactly what I would have posted if I could have expressed my thoughts better. In the past I would post a macro taken with a D6 or C2 and M-members would comment that they could not be able to technically match the quality.

I'm with you. Let's all post together and let the chips fall where they land. The only risk to me is the possibility that I may feel the need to upgrade my Leica equipment.

Unfortunately with each new camera/system change there is inevitably a 'show us your examples' thread (and I plead guilty to starting some) for those very few (inevitably with Leica) with cameras to show examples of what they are capable of...... which is all well and good to start with but they then breed further threads such as 'macro with the Q', 'non Leica lenses with the SL' etc etc. and these just become the de facto places to post the photos. Maybe the forum should give them a limited life span .... say 6 months then close them.

There is also a very active Facebook SL User Group (blame Jono Slack) and Leica Portrait Group which have the advantage of potentially larger images....... so the jam is just being spread ever thinner.

Now the genie is out of the bottle it's difficult to stop ....... but perhaps a general request to post copies IN THE PHOTO FORUM AS WELL might save this part of the forum dying a slow lingering death with just a few of us Leica dinosaurs moping about complaining 'things ain't what they used to be' ..... I have taken to posting slight variations of the same image in several places as the problem of diminishing posts has been noted by me as well.

Having said that, the Photo Forum categories are a bit odd anyway ...... I have given up posting in 'architecture' which is dull as dishwater and  'other' and 'technology' as they are virtually moribund. 'Street' is mostly 'People' so I don't really get the separation.

No good answers ...... but maybe food for thought.

Brent,

a terrific shot: the bird is tacksharp in gorgeous light. The moon makes the difference and provides an exceptional atmosphere.

I am afraid we'll have to intensify our comments and I also noticed a kind of lack of substance. But: if you compare it to other forums the LUF is much advanced and still a fine source of exchange.

Keep going, quality will survive!

Thanks for all the thoughts expressed in this thread. Some things came out that need to be discussed. I hope the mods will look at some of the categories mentioned that are little more than burial grounds for images, regardless of their quality. I also agree with Thighslapper about the questionable line between the People and Street Photography sections. They really should be combined into just one People category.

I've just come upon this discussion, and it has made me realise that, without really being aware of it, I have been gradually posting fewer and fewer photographs due to lack of feedback/interest from Forum members.

Stalwart Stuart almost always comments, for which I (for one) am truly grateful...but often he is the only one and, let's face it, it's not a lot of fun if other photographers don't comment, is it?

Regarding "Osprey and the Moon" this is a beautiful image, sharp, colourful and so well composed. The moon is perfectly positioned and makes the shot magical. The little bird itself is a lovely thing!

As usual, I was a day late and a dollar short to jump onto this topic. Also, as usual, it took a woman to set me on the right path. Thank you Iduna. Let's just get off our butts and express our thoughts about the photographs that our members feel worthy of posting......with constructive criticism or praise. I have 13+ years invested in this family and I, for one, will not surrender to apathy. Happy Fourth of July to all.
