Some food snaps with the SL. The first two with the 24-90 and the last one with the 50/1.4 in a very dark place with a little light from the ceiling above and a candle in the background.

I get the feeling that a lot of people here talk about the X1D in the same way athat a lot of DSLR users talk about Leicas.   They concentrate on all the things it doesn't do as well as their DSLR

Okay so I just had a demo with the X1D.

Some news that I just found out and that is the new X1D will come without a built in GPS. It will come with a separate GOS module simalar to Nikon.

I will post up some pictures that I took with it today

My understanding was that GPS was built-in, but that the hot shoe was Nikon TTL-compatible for use with a Nikon flash system.

according to Ffordes manager he was told by Hasselblad that the X1D will be shipped without a built in GPS and that the GPS will be a separate item. The demo model that I tried today has the latest software where you can move the focus point by either touching the rear screen or by using the front and rear wheels.......... I think the latter is funky. If I remember rightly the rear wheel moves the focus point up and down and the front wheel moves it left or right ...... after you press one of the buttons on top.

The handling of the camera feels amazing and the IVF is so so. The weight with the 90mm lens is less that the SL with the Noctilux and feels great in the hand. As for the GPS I'm not that bothered but over alll the camera feels nice.

I'm to tired to look at the few pictures that I took with the camera today but will do it tomorrow

Perhaps they meant it would be a separate firmware issue.  Still, it's far from being a major issue for me.

Perhaps they meant it would be a separate firmware issue. Still, it's far from being a major issue for me.

We chatted about it for ~5 minutes and he definitely said that the GPS will no longer fit in the body and that it will be a separate item. I looked on B&H and they are still showing with built in GPS so I don't know........ just passing on what I heard today.

On a second note I drove from portee to Inverness to Dundee today and I'm frigging nackard the back road from Inverness to Braemar was a nightmare as it now gets dark in Scotland at 4pm.........

Those roads seem to go on for ever don't they? Especially in the dark. At least you missed the storms.

No matter to me either way, but thanks for the update.  

 

I'll be more interested to know if Hasselblad has ironed out any bugs, heat issues or whatever may have contributed to delays beyond the demand factor.  

 

I was presuming (based on specs and my June demo) that the EVF wouldn't come close to the SL, so no surprise there.  The GFX EVF (3.7m dot) seems to be somewhere between the SL (4.4m dot) and X1D (2.36m dot).....but still need to understand potential lag issues and other important viewing aspects.

Jeff I remember you saying about the shutter sound. There's a definite click sound that doesn't resemble anything else that I've heard but it wasn't obnoxious....... f@ck that's a big word for me :)

The menus were very very nice to look through and large enough font to were I could make out what they say without my glasses on. The camera with lens on is very light when I used it it was already set up for rear button focus and my thumb found it quite easily.

There is a definite lag in taking a picture. When the focus square goes green and you hit the shutter to take the picture it kind of pauses before you get the clankady clank. Also the ISO was hard for me to see in the viewfinder as it's in the top right and with glasses on I had to make a big effort to see what the Auto ISO was at.

Another thing that we found out was that you can't change the lens with the camera switched on........ that's good :)

Jeff, it sounds to me that the X1D's viewfinder is the same or very similar to that in the Fuji X-Pro 2. At least, it has the same pixel count.

 

Thanks, Peter....but I haven't handled that model to make any assessment.  I do however plan to check out 3 cameras that are currently of interest based on my current needs....the SL, X1D and GFX (and potentially any new M that might have better viewing options for wider/longer lenses).  So far I've got a long list of pros/cons for each system, but only real life shooting (and printing) will tell the story.

I'd been holding off on a purchase until the X1D was widely available but I decided to go ahead and get the SL now and revisit the X1D next summer or fall.  It sounds like there is still some work to be done.

 

Integrated GPS actually matters to me.  I'll be taking my camera all over the place on short notice and built-in, automatic geotagging will be very helpful.

Thanks for the images I used B1230016.3FR, in Phocus I changed the White Balance to Cloudy, a little bit of Sharpening and Clarity (both very little) and exported as a JPG. Nice image, I think skin colour looks as it should. Did the camera have the firmware 1.14.2 ? That is the latest version. 

  • Selectable AF point

  • Auto White Balance

  • Exposure simulation on LCD/EVF

  • B and T-modes

  • Lens rmware can be updated through the camera

  • Improved stability when the battery is low

  • Language updates

Thanks for the images I used B1230016.3FR, in Phocus I changed the White Balance to Cloudy, a little bit of Sharpening and Clarity (both very little) and exported as a JPG. Nice image, I think skin colour looks as it should. Did the camera have the firmware 1.14.2 ? That is the latest version.
