I have a X1D on order and after spending a few hours with the camera and the two introductory lenses have no plans to cancel.  cheers/gsmith

Thanks a lot for your detailed comments. I particularly like Manual Focus magnify and it stays when you switch from screen to viewfinder. I have my demo 10th November, looking forward to seeing the camera.

He's not that happy with the EVF.

I wish I'd spent more time scrutinising it. But the fact that it never occurred to me to do so in the hours I was using it probably means  it presented no problems for me.

Glad he's not a full-time reviewer.....the female analogy becomes tortured after the first mention.

That aside, the EVF has been my issue from the start i.e., from poor impression at my June demo.  I'm still hoping that there have been some improvements from the prototype.  The Fuji GFX EVF specs are much better, and its EVF is removable, presumably designed to take advantage of potential future improvements.

I also noted the obnoxious 'clankety clank' shutter sound in this post, after having seen the LuLa video...   http://www.l-camera-forum.com/topic/261949-leica-sl-or-hasselblad-x1d/?p=3136664   Strange that I didn't notice this in June, as I always found the M8/M9 motor whir objectionable, and the X1D video makes its sound seem even more distracting.

Agreed about the reviewer.

I was aware of the shutter sound but I didn't find it objectionable. It was one of those nice positive sounds you get from a well-made piece of mechanical equipment: not silent, but rather satisfying.

Had the EVF been noticeably worse than an XPro2 I almost certainly would have noticed it right away. But I think you've said that (XPro2-EVF)wouldn't be good enough for you, so I wouldn't get too excited about this camera if I were you.  I, on the other hand, am excited about it.

I also like leaf shutters.

I also like leaf shutters.

Are they just as reliable? I get that they are quieter etc and allow flash to 1/2000 which is great. I am waiting until the importer has the H adapter and an extension tube, before my demo with the 90mm in particular. If it meets my needs I may just sell my SL and lenses.

Leaf ("central") shutters rated 1,000,000 exposures.

Never held an XPro 2.

The shutter sound on the LuLa video sounded like metal clapping against metal....nothing positive about it at all....but it was only a video clip.

I'll await actual testing on these issues and much more.  Before that, no reason to get excited or not.....and I'm not one to get emotional about photo tools in the first place....they either suit or not.

Question.

Im thinking of buying a Hasselblad 300mm H lens to take with me on Safari in Feb. I plan to use it on my S007. If at a later date I decided to buy the X1D (after extensive Demo/experiments etc with it) will the H 300 lens fit on the X1D with an adapter????

Thanks in advance

Neil

Hi Neil,

I don't want to pour cold water on your plans, but can I urge caution?  There have been comments (Hasselblad Forum?) about how AF on the H lenses performs on the X1D; hence the conflicting reports about whether or not Hasselblad would offer an adapter.  If it were me, I'd stick with XCD lenses with this camera.  What are you seeking to achieve with such a long lens?  fast and accurate AF is rather important for sport, birds and other wildlife ...

Also, if you think the SL 90-280 lens is big and heavy (it is), the 300mm H lens is even bigger and heavier - I can't imagine the ergonomics of this lens on such a small camera as the X1D - you're adding 198mm onto that rather long adapter, without a hood.  2.12kg, plus adapter weight, with two mounts (the camera mount and the adapter mount) ...

Then again, we all learn from your photography journey,

Cheers

John

I am slightly tempted because of the large sensor but I don't think I could live with the so-so EVF (pixels and refresh rate) after using the SL for a year. I found the X1D I tried, seemed to smear quite a bit on movement. When I go back to the EVF-2 on the M240, it feels small, dingy and primitive compared with the SL, so I only use the M240 now, where I can use the optical finder. For that reason, I think I will wait until the X2D comes out in a couple of years or so, which hopefully will have an EVF at least as good as the SL.

Wilson old chap, with those plans I can't imagine you ever having anything :) :) . Man up bro and take the plunge, you never know in two years time there could be an Hasselblad adapter for iPhone that will make all of this stuff redundant :) :)

One of the guys I work with has the Hasselblad for his moteroller phone.............neat piece of kit.

John Im just trying to kill two birds with one stone :) I know (hope)  the 300mm Hassy will be fine on the S007 (that bloke @Jip and John Mc say it is)............it might just be nice if the 300mm would work on the X1D for a one or two off grab shot................the main porpos of the 300 is to go with my already snappy D5 and 600mm f4 for Safari as it has AF and my Hassy 250 doesn't

Neil,

If Hassy continually lags behind the curve on EVF technology, you might well be right and I will never buy it. The EVF like the OVF on an M is the main interface through which you relate to the camera and if you are lukewarm about that, like I am about the EVF on the X1D, you will end up becoming lukewarm about the whole camera. It will then become an expensive cupboard queen. I think Leica made a brilliant decision to go with the 4MP+, high refresh rate EVF for the SL.

To give you an example, I recently acquired a 1956 (ish) Reid and Sigrist Model III-2, a British made version of the pre-war Leica IIIB. It is a pretty rare camera and beautifully made, even better than the equivalent Leica but using it seems laborious compared with the contemporary M3 , which was about the same price in 1956 as the R&S. The reason: The R&S has separate RF and VF windows and both are small and dingy, compared with the brilliant combined OVF/RF on the M3, so in reality I am surprised they sold as many as 1700 civilian models. I was going to take it to Myanmar with me on Friday, as my film camera for B&W but in the end opted for an equally small Leica CL, due to its far more usable OVF.

I hear you mate, and difficult for me to comment on the IVF on the Hasselblad as I haven't even seen the camera, but from what Peter H says (its okay and not even something to bitch about) so saying that, that would be enough for me to take the plunge...........(I wont I will try first) but for me anyway as long as its not a complete disaster looking through the EVF then all that matters to me is what comes out the other end...........saying all that a few things that do matter to me is;

  • Is the camera sexy...........YES
  • is it small and portable .......Yes
  • Are the files fantastic to work with..........supposedly yes
  • is it NEW....yes
  • Is it in my budget.......I will make it be part of it.

My wife has a Sony A something and I dont like the IVF on that camera, but I can live with it......after shooting with a Leica S for the past 2 years, everything else that I look through including the SL is sh!te compared to the S.

IVF - in vitro fertilisation, when science needs to help you and your wife get pregnant

EVF - electronic view finder, what Leica does well

If you think the SL viewfinder is shite compared to the S, I'm mystified yu think the X1D viewfinder will be just fine ...

Thanks for the spell checker

Ive never tried the X1D EVF so can't comment on it........ive tried the SL IVF and its sh!te compared to the S OVF............its also ugly :) :)
