Hasselblad already offers special edition X1D with strap, lens, custom box and extended warranty...  http://www.theverge.com/circuitbreaker/2016/9/19/12958444/hasselblad-x1d-4116-special-edition-v1d-concept-photokina

I guess they haven't quite learned from Leica to establish an even higher premium price.

Jeff

:D Very true Jeff! Plus, I think this is the first case of a special edition of a camera being announced even before you can actually buy the regular edition of it! :D

Best,

Vieri

But what, if anything, does anyone know about these new XD lenses? Who makes them for Hasselblad, I wonder?

I started to get very excited about a 31mm lens on the X1D (when you do that math on the sensor and published focal length, the lens comes in at 25mm equivalent to 35 FF), but then realized that for heft of X1D + 31mm Blad, one would be close to an SL + SEM-S 24mm.

Odd comparison? Yes, but this is a forum of daydreaming  . I guess the Leica is more expensive and not MF, but the SEM-S 24mm is perfect to the edges of its image circle, wide open, IMHO. So will a Blad without joystick EVF focus @ f/6.3 be really as capable as typ 601 focused with Leica Professional Capability @ f/3.5?

I know, this is likely only enthusing a few WA nuts. But somewhere out there is a Leica SL shooter working with a Summicron-C 25mm, and that would make for a rather exciting 3-way, no?

Well it does give me 3 systems to rent and assess within my shooting and print workflow (already did some very preliminary shooting with the SL).  Still way too early to tell.

I'm betting IQ will be fine all around.  My considerations will involve, among other things, the viewfinder (and focusing) experience, ergonomics and handling, menu and control interface, weather sealing and the lens line array and actual availability.  And a bit of time to determine any reliability or performance issues.

The S was a 4th possibility, but so far I've been underwhelmed by Leica's response to issues.   Even without that, size and cost enter the equation.

Made by Nittoh, I believe the same Japanese company that made lenses for the Xpan (which coincidentally were the 30, 45 and 90....just like the X1D). Hasselblad has a tradition of outsourcing lens manufacturing.....to Kodak, to Zeiss, etc.

Thanks to this thread I too have been looking at the X1D - it's that versus a Leica SL with the 50mm 1.4

You go to go for the Hasselblad. The SL having a APC sensor is just not in that MF leiuge

Some people say there they are not comparable.

But for me, they are...

I haven't got a professional need to fulfill, the semi-professional work I do I already have hardware to cater for it.

I want something that I can travel with to complement the Leica Q. The Leica Q I use for reactive, close up street photography.

I would like something I can use for portraits and scenes where I want clean lines and composition, also something more suitable to studio when I feel like it.

I want something special in the colour and quality that will increase my enjoyment from it's use.

both cameras will do this..

The X1D will give me something new with having a MF sensor, the Leica SL will give me a more responsive AF and general versatility.

I am leaning towards the X1D, but I will have to wait for more information to know if I think it's worth it.

I will try to keep an open mind, but dang it looks ugly :D

+1 there

Im in the same camp as you, if I buy it it will be for enjoyment not because I need it. I had the Q and just sold it as I didn't like the POV or whatever they call it..

For me medium format is the dogs boll@cks, when I first started shooting film 6 months ago I bough a Leica M6TTL and loved it. I then bought a Hasselblad 503CW and the Leica M6 got shoved in the dry box.

I had a M240 and MM....they both got sold when the S006 came along as there files just don't cut it.......compaired to the S files

I had to keep my Nikon gear as there is no way you can get wildlife pictures using a Leica so now I have Leica S007 amazing camera and the files are just fabulass

I have my Hasselblad 503 for shooting film............love shooting film and my M6 for a traveling back and forward to the rig camera.

I need a walk about camera like you, as the S007 is like carrying a screaming kid around your neck........a right pain in the arse.

The 503 is also a large chunk of metal that most of the time for me is shot on a treepod so not really a walk about camera.

I hate IVF but think I can put up with that on the X1O as the files are suposiddily amazing. I said I would wait until Photokena is over before I make my mind up.......... and seeing as Leica never bought anything new to the table apart from a new loner system, I think I will now get the Hasselblad as my walk about camera.

Pictures to follow :)

And now the new Fuji, which will arrive at about the same time as the new 50mm SL will complicate your decision further.

The Fuji will never complicate my decision. I have the SL already and am quite happy with it. Any MFD I buy is a complement for more specific uses.

But current circumstances have had me shelve all MFD notions. Last week, my car was rear-ended. It's too old and too high mileage to be worth the costs of repair. So whatever money I had set aside for MFD has now been put to use purchasing another car. Hopefully the payout from the wrecked car will cover about half of what I needed for the replacement, but regardless there is no budget for MFD for the foreseeable future.

This is okay: I don't really need MFD, I'd just like to work with it. I needed a replacement car more, use it a heck of a lot more, so it only makes sense to get what I want there first.

I'll just keep on shooting 6x6 in film.

I find the SL much more capable for the majority of the projects I shoot.  Sure, it'd be great to have the extra horsepower of a larger file to work with, but at what cost if I'm constantly shooting a file that will only bog down my workflow.  Just finished a project where a client is making prints (very rare for my clients).  She wanted to crop one of my SL images down to the equivalent of about 6MP, and of course make a 20+ inch print. I explained why that was a bad idea and although I've res'd my SL files to the equivalent of about 35MP with good success, her scenario would be problematic.  This issue was the first of it's kind, since I've been shooting digital since 2003.  The DR of the SL is fantastic, better than my previous M240 and my Canon files. Maybe not to the level of a MFB, but very close if the file is exposed and processed properly.

It's not just about MP though (you can get 50MP FF), it's also about having a bigger sensor - and the degree of benefits that might bring :)

Dan, I agree with your thoughts on DR.  As I mentioned in my original post, the SL is very close and IMO, the extra workflow issues dealing with a larger file 100% of the time, and the vast majority of my clients that would not see the difference in the DR of the SL versus a MFB file, is not worth the extra system $$ and effort for me/my clients.  IF I felt an investment in both formats would result in a more prolific client base, I'd find the $$ to invest in MF.  Maybe I need to refresh my client base

Being cynical ..... you have to ask .... are these MF cameras appearing to fulfil a photographers needs in taking pictures ...... or the manufacturers needs in generating income and market share ?

The size differences and price differentials from DSLR seem to drifting down so I foresee more manufacturers getting in on the game.

The high end pro-sumer sector .... both bodies and lenses ..... appears to be the only one that isn't withering and dying, so there must be some mileage in it.

Neil D seems to be single-handedly driving this market ........ keep up the good work  :D
