28 elmarit asph (old)

Performance is very, very good! New version is improved in corner, but this is more evident when using it on Leica SL - on M though, less. However, when stopped down, you will hardly notice any difference. Jono Slack, who compared both lenses,  would certainly give you more precise answer. Anyway, he liked "older" version too...

+1. Both superb lenses, but the new v2 has the edge. Strangely enough, I never really warmed to the the 28 Summicron. Mine is now sold and I'm more than happy with the new Elmarit as my 28.

I had the older version of Elmarit ASPH and purchased it to use on my M8. Then a deal on a 28 Summicron materialized and I had to jump on that one.

So I had both for a time and did a bit of comparison. I prefer smaller lenses and loved the way the little ASPH Elmarit handled. That said I was immediately taken with the way the Summicron rendered images.

It is common to hear that the Elmarit ASPH is very contrasty and I have to agree. I preferred the evenness or smoothness of the Summicron so I sold the Elmarit. I eventually sold my Summicron with my M9 (long story) but now have an M9 again and am using 28mm Elmarit Pre-asph (version 4) that I bought from a friend.I find it strikingly simmilar to the Summicron and recommend it without hesitation- ver 4 is a sweet lens! I have to add though, I have seen gorgeous images made with the little Elmarit ASPH and if someone were inclined to go that way, I'd say do it!

Compared to the old one, the new 28/2.8 asph would not provide significant improvements with the M240 according to Sean Reid. I have no experience with the new lens though.

Compared to the old 28/2, the old 28/2.8 asph is slightly more contrasty with a slightly hasher bokeh. I need to do side by side comparos to see the difference though.
Both great lenses with the 28/2 being a bit sharper at f/2.8 perhaps but the difference is hardly visible again.
Both have moderate CA & flare as well as softer corners below f/4 but none show significant focus shift in my modest experience with R-D1, M8.2, M240 & A7s mod.
As far as field curvature is concerned, i find both old lenses equally sharp edge to edge from f/5.6 to f/11. I never focus at infinity though.

On film, my personal view is that the cron will (in the right hands) give a more uniquely appealing signature to the discerning eye, and i wouldnt really bother with the asph elmarit and just go with the pre-asph (which is what i did)
