I assume that the central shutter (CS) function of Leica S lenses is not supported, right?  Besides that, is it safe to say that the full function of Leica S lenses is supported?

I wonder if it works stacked with the Contax 645 adapter.

I own that adapter as well.  It normally should... Because the R adapter for the SL is not available yet people currently stack multiple adapters as well...

No, it isn't supported. Leica has said from the announcement they were making the adapter that the CS wouldn't be supported on the SL.

From the press release that Andreas links to, the CS lenses ARE supported.

The Leica S has a dual shutter system: focal plane shutter and central shutter.  With the CS lenses you can choose which one to use.

My understanding is that CS lenses are supported on the SL but only in focal plane shutter mode.

Yes, that is my understanding as well. You can use the CS lenses on the SL, but you can't use the central shutter. Sorry for not being more precise.

I think you are right.

I cannot imagine that the Central Shutter will be working on the SL. As I understand from my experience with the S2, the focal shutter in the camera plays some role in the exposure making with the central shutter, they dance together a very complex dance. I am not sure that the shutter of the SL was created equal to the S focal shutter. That's why I have no hope.

The Q is the only 135 format Leica with the central shutter yet.

So considering that the adapter is available and let say that you already have 24-90 and 90-280, if you are going to add S lenses to your SL setup, what would you get?

I suppose if I have extra cash, I would consider the 24mm since that is the weakest focal lenght for 24-90 and may be

100/2 for portrait or 120 apo macro I suppose to fill the gap that is still missing. Which S lenses would you think will complement the SL well?

For portraits I'd take the S100 and S180APO with the ELPRO lens. I am sure that the S70 will very good on the SL , but I would wait for the 50mm SL lens. I plan to use my M lenses as wides.

Keep in mind that the S has a .8x crop factor for 35mm equivalent.....so, for instance, the 120 has a 96mm equivalent field of view on the S, but would act as a 120 on the SL.  The DOF is also shallower on the larger sensor camera.  I mention this only because descriptions from S users may not fully correlate with use on the SL.

Also, one should read the S forum to understand AF motor issues with S lenses, even though Leica has stated that they will repair them even if out of warranty.  The 120 is most often cited, but not exclusively.  Best to go in with eyes open.

I will likely get the 120 Macro. I like the focal length and a high quality macro for the system that also does portraits well is something I very much value. I want to see how the S lens do on the adapter on the SL first, however. If there aren't any serious glitches, then I will get the 120.
