Amazing price on the Leica S-E

I love the transition between focused plane/distance to background of the S files/lenses.

With the M and a sharp lens often the transition seems much more abrupt, a super sharp eye and the other one allready visible out of focus.

Even though with DOF of the larger S sensor being narrower, the sharpness "rolloff" looks more gentle.

Jeff, sorry, lousy term to use. What I should have said is that I find the CMOS files plastic compared to the old CCD files. But the CCD vs. CMOS thing has been done to death and no need to continue it here. Like you inferred lots of choices.

No need for apology to me....I'm not even an S007 owner.  But I bet those owners wouldn't be any more pleased to know that their files are 'plastic', and not 'crap'.  Have you tried one?

As you say, an unnecessary debate.

I can make S007 file work to my like but I way prefer S006/S2 file. I am use to Leica's quirks here and there but not use to Leica trying to replicate Nikon's versatility and good on everything but fall short on pretty much everything compare to Nikon.

Actually, my M-P has better color than my D810. I really don't care for what Sony has done for the color out of their sensors. I know that Hasselblad and Nikon have put their own spin on the output, but even with color checker profiles I still have to play around with the color. I apologize if I've said this before.

So I went back to some 2007 images and checked how I adjusted my original M8 files - and I had to boost quite a few color parameters to get what I wanted. I don't suppose that will ever change! For the S006 files I have to do less to get what I want than with any other digital camera body I've shot.

I took an A7RII RAW, started from linear, and built up quite a nice, not at all plastic (I prefer "color-by-numbers" as a descriptive for the effect) look. It's certainly possible, and with good profile development, possibly even easy. So I have nothing against CMOS as a technology. (I have no complaints about the Q, either). Manufacturers, perhaps in order to optimize the headline numbers (ISO! DR!) choose suboptimal profiles. Certainly the 007 is vastly more capable than the 006, and if it weren't four times the price, I would have gone with one instead. I *did* shoot an 007 for a weekend, and its files were certainly way above average, but it was a newly released model, and perhaps the best profiles weren't yet available.

My strategy, (006) for now, spend money saved on lenses, move to (007) when possible.

After spend time with S007 for almost 3 month, I have decided keep S006 and buy another if it is fail. I have no complain about Nikon color, just like I have no complain about SL(half day with a few tens of file) or S007 color. especially with Landscape, Nikon and S007's green are beautiful.

Here is my thought, if I want live view, or fast AF or video, Nikon all the way. it is so reliable so fast and almost flawless and cheaper, lighter. (the same apply for Canon or Sony) I have no fear to bring them anywhere to worry about the damage or reliability issue.

However, S006/S2 and S glass are shine for their rendering and brilliant skin tone rendering. (again, personal view. not necessary the truth)

S006 with S glass and soft lighting, a magic combo for portrait IMO.

I do shoot handheld mostly and like to use the camera a lot for environmental portraits of kids and family shooting.

Therefore I prefer handheld shooting and the higher ISO of the S007 allow me to do this also indoors and less than ideal light.

After using the S007 for some time now I would say the color of the S006 is maybe even more natural, but the S007 is very good too,

so I accept very slight compromise in color for the benefit of more freedom in regards of ISO/ exp time/ f-stop.

ZHNL: do you own both the S006 and 007 or did you get rid of the S007?

S007 is a loan unit. I feel S007 is almost 2 stop better than S006 at low light. AF is faster, shutter and mirror action are improved a lot as well. No question about its improvement.

Agree with your observation. I feel like 007 is finally what the S series should have been. 006 feels a bit old in comparison, even to the 645D....
