I rarely use a rear screen and love the look of the MD, my ideal would be a 240MD type camera. Use the camera without the EVF most of the time, but when critical long lens focus needed, or on paid jobs, to check lighting or manual WB I could add the EVF which is ugly enough and poor enough that I wouldn't always be using it. I also need video to be there but can use OVF for that. I love the fact that whilst shooting video I can still take a proper still.

I am so tempted. I really don't need it but am strangely attracted. I made the mistake of picking up one in a shop and its beautiful and simple - almost perfect!

My question is,  long term M-D question. Those who have had it more then a month or so now, still enjoying it ?

I just received my M-D yesterday. I had moved from the M9-P to the 006 and 007 and still have those, but wanted to get back to the M. Though it's been one day, I'm very happy with it. Reminds me of the M7 I used to have. Nothing like using the rangefinder and not fiddling with chimping. I'm sure I'll have this one for a long, long time.

I´m in the way of receiving my MD, and the only thing I don´t get is the way the camera gets a format card, I understand it is through a computer, any of users could give me a link or a clue, just to be prepared. Thanks and happy shooting.

On the Mac a program named SDFormatter ... mount the card it will format and check it ... the card unmount to be formatted then appears again.

When I transfer captures to a folder on the computer I then upload into LR check them and immediately format the card and return it to the camera ... in one

setting. That way I am sure to get any "unprocessed and archived pictures" off the card.

I am sure that there is one on the PC ...

Since buying the M-D, I find it is now my favorite M and actually my favorite user camera. It's not as versatile a camera as the SL or M-P, but that's not what I bought it for. It's just what I want to have in my hand the most. I use it mostly with the 35 and 75 lenses, although right now I'm on a Color-Skopar 28/50 jag with it.

I use the SL more, specifically because of its versatility and viewfinder. But that doesn't matter. The SL is my working camera, what I pick up when it's important that I don't miss a shot and it does most anything I could ever want a camera to do. The M-D is what I pick up when I want to go see what I can see with as little to obstruct or distract me as possible...

Go here: https://www.sdcard.org/downloads/formatter_4/index.html

SD Card Formatter is distributed by the SD Association for both Windows and macOS. It does the correct job of formatting SD, SDHC, and SDXC cards. On that page you'll see what OS versions you need for the different card standards.

Note: A 16G card in the M-D will store about 500 images. After the first week or so of having put a charged battery into the camera (which slowly gets drawn down as it fully charges the M-D's internal capacitor/condensor), I find that a full charge on the battery tends to allow making one full 16G card's worth of photos, unless you leave the camera switched on all the time and only use it infrequently. Then you might have to charge it once before filling the card.

So what you can do is basically charge the battery and format the card, load them both into the camera, and then go shooting until the card is full. It's like having 13-14 rolls of film at your disposal... At the end of that, move all the photos into Lightroom, reformat the card, recharge the battery, load and go shooting again, while you slowly go through your work with Lightroom. All of the anticipation and joy of discovering what you photographed after the fact, like we once did with film cameras on travel...  :D

Since I just got mine last week, I'll let you know in mid February.

Leica should add a SD card formatting capability through some funny combination, just like we can set the date. It would give me a bit piece of mind, as I would not necessarily always take a computer with me. And iPads and iPhones cannot format cards, as far as I know.

iPads and iPhones can't format cards, but you can import a card's content and erase it from the card. You don't need to format cards all the time.

I actually like that I can't format or erase a card with the M-D. Since it has no LCD, you can't see what's on the card in the camera, so at least I have the opportunity to do that on a computer where I can see what's on the card first.

Thank you folks, can´t wait for Santa this year.

Next will be some of my lenses 6-bit coded, do you think it is worth the expense?

It's certainly worth the expense for the shorter focal lengths because then the lens profiles will be automatically applied to correct the lenses properly, never mind that sensible EXIF data including the lens name and focal length will be embedded. I had my 1972 Summilux 35 coded and am very glad I did.

I understand your point in not being able to delete something you cannot see. My use case is to assure myself that a certain SD card is formatted correctly before usage. That may not be relevant in Luxembourg and even considered stupid there  :p . Not something difficult to add and it would in my eyes add to the concept, in that I'd stay clear of computers for a while  :)

I have no idea what Luxembourg has to do with formatting cards properly, or why formatting cards before use might be considered stupid there. Why bring your prejudices to the table when they are so irrelevant?

Adding formatting in the camera opens the notion that a user can inadvertently experience data loss, since there is no way in the camera to see what is on the card. I suspect that the first time you deleted your prized vacation photographs inadvertently, you'll be yelling at Leica as to why they allowed you to format your card when you couldn't see that it had your unsaved photographs on it, and could maybe even file a suit over it. Even dumber things have been the subject of lawsuits.

Formatting the card properly before usage is done easily with the SD Card Formatter app on Windows, macOS, or Linux prior to using the card. Once a card is formatted properly, it will stay that way. Erasing exposures from a properly formatted card with an app like Photos from your iPad does not alter or damage the formatting in any way.
