The current M 240 is 5mm thicker than the M8/M9 body, which is why the old Leica accessories don't fit (half case, grip, etc)

Actually, I use my M8 full case (on the rare occasion I use one) for my M240. The only difference is the location of the tripod bush ( which is the reason the grip doesn't fit btw) - so I drilled another hole. The cameras are the same size, as is my M9...

As soon as my 240 is back from Wetzlar I'll post a comparison photograph to convince you. I'll throw in the MM1 too...

I'm beginning to suspect that the true purpose of this camera and pricing is an clever ruse to get M240 adherents to accept the 262 as the second body of choice.  Certainly has me reconsidering it's value proposition given its pricing.

If it is not worth its price to you don't buy it. I won't.

I regularly use Leica cameras of different types made between 1926 and 2016. I don't perceive this camera as a digital M7 but rather as a stripped down M240. The M240 has some 'clunky' features such as the exposure compensation that involves a button and a thumb-wheel.  This system is carried through, in a slightly different form, into the M-D. The compensation thumb-wheel on the D-Lux ( inherited from Panasonic and also used by Fuji) is far quicker and more instinctive. I generally prefer to change settings looking down on the camera rather than through the viewfinder. I know that many people won't agree with me on this but that is how I adjust my old non-metered film Leicas. There are other handling issues as well, some of which would be a matter of personal taste. For example, if you move the shutter speed dial with the camera to your eye, you will not know what shutter speed has been set. My 40+ year old M5 gives me the shutter speed in the viewfinder

Based on handling issues alone, I would have to handle this camera before considering purchase. Where I live I would have to travel to another country in order to do this. A real 'first world' problem.

I can compare when I get home, but the thumb tab would explain the difference in listed specs.

I guess Leica has hit the Apple syndrome .............run out of ideas, hence all the subtle variations     Looks like Leica's equivalent the the IPhone SE

Are you trying to say that the Barnacks have no subtle variations? Or the M6 which has probably the largest number of special editions ever seen on any camera?

If the new M-D is same size as M (type 262) less LCD screen, that is very nice indeed.

Here are the dimensions of some of my Ms.

From base of M6, Monochrom 1 and M (type 262)

Looks like the actual baseplate area is thicker on the newer cameras, but it evens out because of the amount the d-pad control wheel on the M9 protrudes. Or maybe it's an illusion.

It would be even nicer if they shaved off the 1 mm that the LCD protrudes inside ;)

And still nicer if the slimmed the upcoming M 1 or 2 mm. I would not like them to go back to the thickness of the film Ms, though. Nowadays they feel a bit skinny in my hands.

I wonder when the next generation comes out (which many believe may be later this year), will there be analagous (not analog ;) ) versions to the current spate of M240 variants, or will they be doled out piecemeal as has been Leica's wont in the past?

Been shooting a ton of digital in the last 6 months. Just got some film from awhile back developed. The M-D will give you the experience of learning to focus more on exposure as the mistakes can be costly. Oh and it will make you realize that film looks waaaaaaaaay better for the same effort. (Sip tea, pinky up)
