Actually we have been sniffed over twice, once by an adolescent bull, once by an ancient Matriarch. Problem with that situation is that one cannot spook the Elephant by raising a camera and clicking it, not even thinking about  changing lenses from 400 to 12 mm... ;) Both occasions were fully in the wild.

 

Real close contact is possible with the Presidential Herd in Zimbabwe who will check your pockets for peanuts and with Elephant Camp in Livingstone, Zambia where you can do relatively affordable Elephant bush rides on rather affectionate Ellies. But those are completely habituated animals, as opposed the the one in the photograph.

very nice and exciting. Good to see human beings and elephants and friendly terms. Delightful sight and they vivid eyes of the animal is touching.

I just listened today to a new report on the ivory problem and more or less successful strategies to fight against poachers and criminal gangs.
