Leica SL Firmware v.2.0 answers our wishes

It's a little unfair to start scoring "2.0 to 1.2" that way because you'll never, ever see another lockup with v1.2 ... Wouldn't you say?  :D

To date, I've seen no lockups at all with v2.0. I had one lockup, right at the beginning, with the first beta release. Never with v1.2.

Most of the cases of repeated lockup that I've heard about have been solved by redoing the user configurations:

- export your user configurations

- reset the card

- import the user configurations

This suggests that lockups can be caused by cruft in the user configurations data when the SL is reading them in at boot up time. Writing the data out and reading it back in fresh is a logical way to remove any cruft like that.

Yeah, I know it's unfair but I've shot extensively with the old firmware so they're still on equal basis. Thanks a lot for the advice. It sounds very logical so I will try that and report back if the lock ups occur again.

I had two lockups with FW 1.1. http://www.l-camera-forum.com/topic/254276-blind-sensor-issue/?p=2947527. Since then, I've taken over a thousand photos using FW 1.2 and 2.0 with no further lockups.

I have empathy for Leica on this one. Problems that are infrequent and seemingly random are not going to be easy for anybody to track down and fix. It would be a great help if someone could find precise conditions that reliably reproduce the problem.

Note that I meant to write "camera" not "card" ... damn autocorrection...

Advertisement (gone after registration)

Took delivery of my SL yesterday, with firmware 1.2 (I think) and updated to 2....

Now I have a viewfinder with thin green vertical lines all over the frame. The screen image on the back is fine as are the files, just the viewfinder...The scene beyond the green lines is fine and the camera works well otherwise.

Unless I have selected some weird display mode I think this is an error. Can I try and reload firmware 2 again?, the camera normal process for this suggests not (just says you already have the firmware and goes no further)

Can someone suggest a fix or just take it back for a swap?

Thanks

Douglas

Take it back.

Sometimes I see the focus peaking highlights for a moment, when I have another overlay selected. For example, if I have the level selected in AFs mode, half press the shutter and change the zoom, I get peaking.

Now, it's not particularly useful with a AF lens. I would like to have it enabled when I zoom in with a manual lens by pressing the joystick, or have a combination of peaking and level with manual lenses, but that doesn't seem to be possible, regrettably.

Are there any other "Easter Egg" modes?

Just as a quick follow up, Leica have been in touch directly and are sending (express) a new SL straight from the factory (with a late serial number), already updated to firmware2

The service has been very good both from my dealer in London (London Camera Exchange in The Strand) and Wetzlar, shame I had to go through the process at all but still the outcome is good

  • 2 weeks later...

Hello -

Wow 11 pages speaking about the V2.0 update…

I think I get also a couple of new bugs since this update.

I ONLY use the "SL" with "M" lenses (meaning with the M>T ring adaptator).

I mainly shoot at 200ISO in "A mode" and I essentially do "long" exposures (a typical case would be ±20 seconds).
My "SL" is already upgraded with 2.0 firmware.

    1.    Sometimes the camera won't let me take the picture even if I push a tenth time the shutter button. In the worse case, I have to turn off the camera, take out the battery and turn the camera back on again to be able to take a picture.
    2.    The main problem I have is that I am LIMITED at MAX. 8 seconds with my Sumilux 21mm in "A mode". Of course I can switch to the "M mode" but there the light exposure estimation is erroneous. (eg. where I expect to have 10 seconds exposure, the camera tells me that I will need 240 seconds). And it's even worse with my Zeiss® Distagon 15mm (I'm LIMITED at 2seconds!!!!).
    3.    As already mentioned, I only use "M" lenses and yet I have access to the "P mode" (something that should not be possible, right?) when I choose the "default profile" where temporarily everything seems to be OK (ie. correct light exposure estimation, no longer limited to 8 seconds, …)
    ◦    Why temorarily? Because if I switch to the "A/M mode" I can't go back to the "P mode".
    4.    Last big problem that I've already experienced 2 times so far  ->   I was taking a 0.8 second picture (esimated by the camera), but the picture was completely underexposed so then I moved it up a notch to 4 seconds and yet the result was the same as the 0.8 second exposure. So I decided to force the exposure to 8 seconds… AGAIN, the result was the same as the initial underexposed picture (0.8sec). From there, of course I had to switch to the "M mode" (because of my problem of being limited to 8 seconds) and I decided to "force" at 30 seconds and to my surprise, the result was STILL the same as the 0.8 second!. The only solution I found at this time is to turn off the camera, take out the battery and turn it back on again. After this, I was able to take a picture correctly estimated and exposed at 4 seconds.

Have you programmed Setup -> Customize Control -> Mode Lock -> On? If so, then the next time 1. happens, look at the LCD/EVF. Do you see an icon of a microphone at the top with two horizontal bars to the right of it? If so, the SL is in Video mode and pressing the shutter button won't record a photo. You should be able to give a short press to the LV button to return to Photo mode where the shutter button works as expected.

One issue I discovered yesterday when playing with an SL at the dealer unfortunately cannot be addressed through firmware.  The VF goes dark when wearing polarized sunglasses, if the camera is held in horizontal/landscape orientation.  Bummer....I'll need new glasses if I purchase.

A spectacle wearer, I dislike operating a camera or viewing through binoculars whilst wearing them. I always use a spectacle neck cord so I can drop the glasses out of the way. Works for me.

I need to wear them, not just for distance and astigmatism correction, but for sensitivity to light, and to avoid taking glasses on and off, which I hate.  It's worked perfectly for decades, with all my cameras, including various Ms....until yesterday with the SL.

Ah, sorry, as you say - bummer!

True, and also true for any other EVF that I have worked with.  I have a polarized pair of sunglasses that I cannot use with the SL or my Olympus gear, and plain colored pair that works fine. Also, there is no problem using my M[240] with the polarizing sunglasses.

Yes, this is true of anything with a LCD display. I first saw this when trying to use some device with an LCD display in the early 1990s...

I keep polarized sunglasses in my car for driving, otherwise I use either transitions equipped regular glasses or sunglasses with a simple ND tint.
