Thanks for the details, Suteetat. I think David's images are very nice, but assessing sharpness at web resolution is not possible.

Keep in mind that post-processing is as important as the lens, and that the Zeiss 135/2 APO outresolves a 24 MP sensor wide open.

Yes, definitely. That's why I talked more about what I feel to be perceived depth, 3D quality or whatever which is hard to define

but generally I think it is a quality that is not necessarily affected by low resolution web effect. You can see it on LCD monitor on the camera, download straight to your cellphone or look at it on a computer monitor at full resolution, if it is there, it is there. I am not aware of any post processing that will create this effect well but I am a very basic post processing kind of guy. I can see this effect quite easily with 50/0.95, 35/1.4 AA, Noct Nikkor 58/1.2 slightly less so in 50/2 apo, Nikon 58/1.4 and Zeiss 35/1.4 zm. 135/2 apo is a great lens and does have a hint of this as well but 90-280 seems to be the first tele lens that really grab my attention this way. May be IQ was a wrong word but definitely a certain perceived effect that I find very pleasing to my eyes.

I will say that the 24-90 also produces images with that kind of quality.  At 35mm and comparable apertures, I'm afraid it is as good if not very slightly better than my 35 FLE.

  • 2 weeks later...

Well a few people have now received the lens, but word from the small sample of retailers that I just polled is that we won't be seeing the next batch of lenses for at least 6 weeks.  Whether this is production run hiccoughs or just filling the channel, worldwide, I don't know.

There was only one lens delivered to Digidirect in Sydney. Only one. They expect a few more in coming weeks but claim they haven't left Wetzlar yet. Paxtons in Sydney so far got nothing and expecting two lenses before end of April. One of them has my name engraved already

I've spoken to Leica Aus rep yesterday and he tells me I should get my lens in a week or so.  B)

Are these lenses very slow arriving at dealers? I was number 2 in the queue at a UK dealer but so far they have only had a single example. I had hoped it would arrive before I left to go down to France, as that would avoid expensive courier charges but it didn't

Where did you get that cuddly toy - so lifelike ...         :)

A Christmas Day mishap.  Came home to find the happy parents-to-be enjoying each other.

Looks like fun.  I see you are missing a sandal.  Today I was missing a glove.

Ffordes have advised me that Leica have confirmed there are production problems with this lens, which is causing a delay in deliveries to dealers. I now wish I had taken my 80-200/f4 R lens to France with me but space was at a premium. However, I would much rather Leica took their time rather than sending yet another duff lens to me, that needs to go straight back to the factory for re-assembly.

I'd be interested what the problems are. My lens seems to be near perfect at all focal lengths.

Maybe I should do a show and tell in Sydney for anyone who wants to see one in the flesh?

I've been told by Leica Australia, I should be getting mine this week. Fingers crossed. There are only two being shipped to my dealer.

Someone who has one is saying his is not parafocal. I wonder if this could be the problem. It certainly should be parafocal, as this is of considerable importance to movie makers if less so using AF on stills.
