Hi there. Have a question about a Summicron lens I'm thinking of buying. Version IV 1991. The aperture blades don't completely clear from view on F2 and I'm wondering if this is normal for this lens?

The aperture dial is nice and positive and lens is in good condition. I have a Summaron 35/2:8 and the aperture blades clear from view on that lens. It's a question of which lens to keep as well. Both are nice to use so any advice is welcomed. Regards Robin.

No worry.

On every Summicron-M 2/35mm version IV that I came across, the aperture blades don't clear completly at f:2.

So it's normal for this model.

But which to keep? That's a real stickler! I regret selling my Summaron (in favour of Zeiss 35 f2.8 ZM) but less so the Summicron v4, as I think maybe it's had its day, perhaps, and has certainly become overpriced.

Well my Biogon 35/2.8 blows away my Summaron 35/2.8 to the point that i don't use the latter any more i must say.The Summaron has more CA and is softer than the Biogon especially at f/2.8 and in borders and corners below f/8. It has also more flare and is less contrasty than the Biogon, which can be an advantage for some photographers. The Summicron v4 flares even more and suffers from a bit of focus shift while being softer than the Biogon below f/4, especially in borders and corners. It is rather sharp at f/2 in the center though so it is of course superior to both Biogon and Summaron fron this viewpoint. Bokeh wise the OoF rendition of the 3 lenses looks rather smooth but the "king" would be the Biogon there in my humble and of course subjective opinion. FWIW.

Thanks for the replies. I'm reassured about the aperture blades position but I wasn't aware there was such a feeling about the question of which lens is better. It's a difficult choice. Both are great. I'll maybe have to keep both! Regards Robin.
