LUF Admin Posted March 4, 2016 Share #1 Posted March 4, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) About a week ago we asked you which camera system you use - from Leica or other manufacturer.1,278 voted, 442 from the German part, 836 in English.I did the analysis for both languages combined as they had no significant differences except for:- The share of Leica R photographers in Germany is twice as big- M shooters have a bigger share on the international sideA preliminary note before I dig deeper into the numbers:The survey is representative of the active Leica forum members - not more but not less. It doesn't claim to stand for all Leica customers or to reflect the „real“ photo market.I wouldn't overrate the exact numbers but some results are really interesting - for example how fast Leica Q and Leica SL established itself in the forum.Over to the survey - we put two or actually three questions to you:1. Which camera systems in general do you use?- Leica only, also other manufacturers or no Leica at all?- Which camera systems not from Leica do you use?2. Which Leica camera systems do you shoot with? Here are the results:Leica only or having affairs? The majority of forum members is open for different camera systems:Only 26% shoot Leica only, 72% use beside Leica other systems - and 1% don't have a Leica at all. Welcome, dear visitor! As registered member you'd see an image here… Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! Which Systems Beside Leica? The 914 members using different systems are distruted well over the alternatives- 45% DSLR (24% Nikon, 16% Canon, 5% other DSLR)- 33% film- 30% mirrorless- 25% smartphone- 20% compact cameras- 19% medium formatThis adds up to more than 100% as multiple choice was allowed. In average users have 2.5 camera systems different from Leica.I'm going to ask for more details some time soon - which other manufacturers are popular among Leica photographers - and why?And Which Leica Systems? The second question was which Leica Product Systems are used by Leica Forum members? The distribution of the various systems shows that Leica M is still dominant: 80% of all contributors are using Leica M.By a large margin three systems follow with 17% each: D-Lux, vintage Leicas and Leica R.After the Leica X series the systems introduced last year are following: Leica Q and Leica SL.Again the numbers add up to more than 100% as multiple choice was allowed. In average users have 1.8 different Leica systems in use. It's going to be interesting how the relations will shift over the next months and years when the Leica SL system grows and maybe Leica introduces new Leica Q cameras. We'll stay on the ball! Doc Henry Posted March 4, 2016 Share #2 Posted March 4, 2016 Great and nice statistical work. Thanks Andreas. Interesting result .75% M wow ! I love now only my rangefinder M cameras "Any suggestions for more surveys ? " I think many (how many ?) also uses screws or historical M "15% smartphone" Leica has a future in this direction. Someone who uses exclusively Leica R as M since 1970 Best regards Henry
sandro Posted March 4, 2016 Share #3 Posted March 4, 2016 Andreas, very interesting, these results. I agree with Henry that a further refinement in the kind of M camera's would be interesting, to see how strongly the more historical M bodies still may be represented. I would like to know how many people use both film and digital M bodies, and how many use only one of these, and also which M bodies. Best, Lex
flappo Posted March 4, 2016 Share #4 Posted March 4, 2016 Love to see the breakdown on which M people use , very happy the D lux came second . My d lux 4 is still amazing me even now years since buying it. Who needs an DSLR anyway ?? I'm saving up for an M. One day I WILL have one !

sewing_machine Posted March 4, 2016 Share #6 Posted March 4, 2016 At the risk of sounding ageist, I'd find it interesting to see the age range of Leica users - I'm just hoping there is a good cross section. And thank you for undertaking the survey.
roadrider18 Posted March 4, 2016 Share #7 Posted March 4, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) Andreas... Excellent work with the survey. Likewise, I would be interested in knowing the break down by Leica model/Typ. I am still in the analog age using an M4P and M6 .085. I have visited the Miami (Florida, USA) Leica store many times trying to decide on a digital M. I am very close to buying a Typ 262. My first digital (non-smart phone) camera! Thank you again for undertaking the survey/project! Bill
Herr Barnack Posted March 4, 2016 Share #8 Posted March 4, 2016 It looks like the M system reigns supreme among respondents, which is not really a surprise. Film is also far from dead, which I find strange. People were saying "film is dead" back in 1996. Talk about dying from a protracted illness... AAK Posted March 4, 2016 Share #10 Posted March 4, 2016 More detail on film within the M group would be interesting. Thank you for this interesting survey.
keithlaban.co.uk Posted March 4, 2016 Share #11 Posted March 4, 2016 So, no doubt which system is Leica's bread and butter, then?
mdemeyer Posted March 4, 2016 Share #12 Posted March 4, 2016 Interested to know how common it is for users of other systems to use Leica lenses (M and R seperately) on other bodies. This is a quite different use case from just owning another parallel system. Thanks!
bonjac Posted March 4, 2016 Share #13 Posted March 4, 2016 What does all of this say about the Leica T? Is it a failure? It would seem so from the data you show.
MirekE Posted March 4, 2016 Share #14 Posted March 4, 2016 Thanks for posting the results. Couple ideas for future polls: Lens preferences. This can be sliced and diced in multiple ways (Leica vs non-Leica, old vs current, fast vs slow, most frequently used FL, aberration correction vs character, ...) Areas of photographic interest (art vs technical perfection, printing vs web publishing, nature vs people, ...)
mxa Posted March 5, 2016 Share #15 Posted March 5, 2016 Do not stop with medium format. Some of us still shoot 4x5 or 8x10 or even larger. So, include "large format" as well.
