Hello Agencal,

Welcome to the Forum.

Assuming you mean the latest 90mm Elmarit: Both lenses are pretty much equally sharp in most circumstances at most apertures.

The real difference is in the angle of coverage.

A 90mm lens takes away unwanted foreground & extraneous sides & top. It does this while leaving the central part pretty much looking like it does with a 50mm lens.

A 135mm lens reaches more into the center of things & allows a person to concentrate on a portion of the scene. A 135mm lens is also the beginning of a slight degree of image compression which some people like. But not in as pronounced a manner as image compression is with an even longer lens.

These differences in coverage are an important consideration in determining which of the 2 would be better for you.

You might try viewing potential scenes with the frame selector set individually to both lenses & see which 1, if not both, is/are better for the type of photos you take.

Because of this difference in perspective some people are more comfortable having both focal lengths.

Best Regards,

Michael

I am not sure what lies behind your question:  Superior sharpness or sensible focal length choice. For me focal length would be my priority and in my  experience I would find a 90mm lens, from any era, more useful generally than I would the longer lens. The last 90mm Elmarit is an extremely good lens for most applications.

I've owned both the 90mm f2.8 Elmarit and the 135mm f3.4 APO-Telyt for the past 8 years. I find the 90mm Emarit  a superior lens both in terms of image quality and usefulness, more so than the 135mm. In fact I recently sold my 135mm APO.

If you feel that you need both lenses, you can purchase the 90mm Elmar and always add a 1960s 135mm f4 Elmar, wonderful lenses, and good value. I still have 2 of these in my arsenal, 1 in LTM and 1 in M mount.

They're available for a coupe of hundred $. Here's 1 example:
