MP - just for posers?

Hello

Is the MP used by anyone on here professionally? With M6 prices very decent I really don't see any point in spending three times the cost for the MP. Yes the flare issue is one factor differing these two excellent cameras, but is there anything else?

I'm a former MP owner and now have the M6 Classic.

SY.

Shiva you did good with the M6Ti if that's a finish you can like.

There are many people who either do not like the M6Ti finish or who prefer the slightly better finder of the MP, some like the film rewind of the old M bodies vs the crank rewind better, some simply want a true black paint body (you can get a true black paint M6 as well, yet these cost the same on the second hand market as a similar grade second hand MP).

It simply comes down to very little differences between the actual cameras and the many, many years people know this one camera will last, hence the price difference simply does not matter as much when spread over 10, 20 or more years of use.

I myself have a black paint MP, I bought it second hand (at the time not even double the cost of a similar condition M6) and it's a nice camera. I also still have my M6.

Apart from the differences in the finder and the slight differences how the light meters work (the MP meter is a few stops more sensitive in low light) and the different film rewind there is no practical difference between the two at all.

People who buy a new MP at full price nowadays simply like to buy their things new - hardly a point to criticize them for.

I recently had my Leica M7 overhauled and modified at the cost of a nice M6 sample (it's shutter was broken and I elected to have some details on the camera changed to my liking).

Does that make me a poser as I hardly even use the camera? I think not - I just chose to do so, as it provides a little happiness to have this camera the way I want it.

It's a bit like one guy who paid a body shop to flare the fenders on his car, repaint it and have larger wheels fitted while another guy who drives a small Volkswagen mocks him about the more expensive car model and useless expenses on modifications, while both cars will surely bring their occupants to their destination in the same amount of time.

Well, one of them simply enjoys his car a certain way the other might not want to understand … both people in the end are perfectly right with their decision about cars and cameras and lifestyles and religions and life partners and pencils and Mac vs PC and …

I think your choice of thread title is very much a mistake.

I am sure their eis a great number of MP users who do … use their camera and simply prefer it for a specific reason.

I bougt a new BP MP, but it had been a demo camera for about.... 2 days at a show, and only spent the time in the shelf, totally untouched, at 25% off retail price.

I wanted the MP. So I got what I wanted right away, rather than getting an M6 then an MP down the road (the poor man pays twice).

I specifically wanted a BP body.

My wife purhcased a 2nd hand (but mint) silver MP at about 20% more than what used M6's go for. I'd call that a good deal. And again, THAT was the camera she wanted.

I think it's better to get what you want, if you can. Rather than just getting something and then upgrading later to what you really wanted (which usually costs more in the long run, both money wise and time spent on searching, agreeing, purchasing, shipping and so on).

I wouldn't consider myself a poser. But I do love my BP MP, and it's staying with me until I leave this earth (which also made the decision about getting what I really wanted so much easier... If it was a digital camera I probably would have gotten a 2nd hand one, as it doesn't last).

It is the classic Lexus vs Toyota question. Purely emotional and subject. It is just a light box, after all

....but i would take the MP any day

....even worse....i paid essentially the MP price for a dummed down M-A

No, i cannot articulate why this makes any sense....

But i LOVE my M-A

Care to elaborate?

-Zinc body? No thanks.

-Chrome finish? No thanks.

-Flarey viewfinder? No thanks.

-Older electronics technology (metering leds) vs. Newer and better in the MP? No thanks.

-plastic protectors on the camera's sides? No thanks.

-And while we're there, the number 6 is my least favorite number from 1 to 10.

If you ask me, a M6 is much more poseur than a MP.

The story is at one point Leica was prepared to discontinue rangefinder camera production after a less than warm welcome for the M5 and strong SLR sales from other manufactures.  The M4-2 kept the M camera in production and development continued towards the M6.  When the M6 was introduced sales of rangefinder cameras raised from moribund to having enough of a pulse to continue.  Nearly thirty years after the introduction of the M6, sales were strong enough to bring on the introduction of the MP and a return to the classic controls Leica moved away from with the M6 TTL.  The M6 was the second best selling M camera, just behind the M3 for production numbers.  This showed there was a continuing, if small, demand for rangefinder cameras keeping the line alive.

So I think my provocative title got some good answers. I find it amusing/ amazing how we all have to justify our choices on such forums. I am including myself in this obviously. The thing with film cameras though is they don't change the photo like with digital. I think the M6 flare issue has been written about to death and really isn't that bad. Sure the MP is better in this regard but for a poor man like me, I am just delighted to have a film M again for hobby use.

Black paint is a tricky one. All the talk of stealth street shooting and black tape... But then we all like brassing! Hardly inconspicuous especially on bright sun, reflecting light all over the shop. Hence my use of the word posers in this thread.

The Ti is almost like chrome, it's subtle and not for everyone. I was offered it at a very good price, sure it needed a service hence the price but at least I know the service has been done.

I drive an old car and never trust sellers who say, it's 'just' been serviced. I'd rather buy something at a lower price and then service it myself.

The M-A is a beauty but I've never been in the market for a new camera at this price, plus I like having a light meter built in. It works and is reliable for my needs.

Finally, Vic commented yesterday when opening my serial number 23xxxxxx M6 that the chassis still have twin bulb and strobe holes, although the bulb was not connected to anything. I personally like this little bit of history, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Leica clear were using the same chassis tooling machines from the M3-M2-M4 when fabricating the M6. The body sizes are the same right?

I'd have thought the M6 vs MP was the Mercedes or BMW question personally but now see the Lexus vs Toyota analogy is more appropriate.

With best,

Shiva - All I can say is that, if the M6 works for you, the more power to you and the less power to the others (including me)...  Enjoy it and I would encourage you to share your images in the "I Like Film" thread in the "Other" section of the Photo forum.

Best,

Adam

It's not about bashing the M6 at all. It is a superb camera withnan excellent track record. It's just that I personally can't accept an M to be made of Zinc.

And then there is Black Paint, which ages so gracefully and it sticks to the fingers, as opposed to Black Chrome.

Yes I have my films at the ready. Should have the M6Ti back in my hands mid next week.

Perhaps when I am back in the uk and feeling flush, I'll have CRR Luton strip the Ti off to brass and then paint it black ;-)

Poser here, and I enjoy running a few rolls through it every now and again.

Ah some honesty... how refreshing. I would love to see a photograph of your posing camera! I spent most of last night trawling the internet for photographs of brassed Leica cameras. #sadbuttrue
