I actually like some sound when I release the shutter, having used Ms and other film cameras for 40+ years.  Complete silence, while maybe practical for some folks, is unnerving to me.....like electric cars.

Jeff

Electric cars have to make some artificial engine noise to warn pedestrians of their approach.  Likewise cameras with silent electronic shutters have some artificial shutter sound the user can activate.  The latest generations of sound-deadened Porsches have a mic in the engine bay that pipes the exhaust note through the stereo speakers if the driver chooses.  It's a mad mad mad mad world ;)

This was the bit that cracked me up:

Leica: “Traditionally, our cameras are purchased by 3 types of people:

Leica habit turns you into a starving artist ;)

OK in my case: "would-be" artist

I like this new Leica, will have one as soon as it will be availabe .....

Me too...it reads as being exactly what I would have requested had Leica consulted me on the subject!

262s started trickling into Australia a couple of days ago, appearing unannounced at the bigger dealers.

I have placed an order with my dealer, but I must wait awhile as they are one of the smaller Leica stockist in this country and so don't get first dibs, even so I hope to have a 262 for Xmas.

I hope this hasn't been answered somewhere else in this forum, but, does anyone know when the M 262 will be available in the USA?  Thanks, Rich

I doubt anyone can foresee the answer to this question.....but here's what little I know: for utterly mysterious reason/s both the SL and the M 262 have been released first in Australia rather than in the US, with the larger Leica

outlets here receiving their first stock of the M 262 late last month.

I am waiting patiently for the promised second wave to wash up my M 262 onto the sands of the small Leica dealership in Melbourne where my order has been placed.

Why would Leica release anything first in Australia? It seems incomprehensible as a business decision.

Maybe Leica wanted to test reception in a smaller market before planning some production?

Just my idea

I had a chance to handle an M262 in Red Dot Cameras today; they have a few in stock. The camera is noticeably lighter in the hand than an M240-series and I thought the shutter was indeed a little quieter (surprising revelations eh?).

All in all, I liked it very much; one if those things which to me was better in the flesh than the on-paper spec.  But I resisted giving myself an early Christmas present, and went home feeling very virtuous!

May I ask how much quieter it was?  By a lot or only a little, or somewhere in between?

Did they mention whether there will be a chrome/silver version available?

It was not a huge difference, and I think the M240/246 shutter sound is just fine anyway. Difficult to define but I also thought it sounded not just quieter but somehow a little different. But a fine sound nonetheless.

There was was no mention of a silver chrome finish coming, but that would seem a logical step. What I'd really like though is a Monochrom version!!

I was in a Leica Store today (sadly the M262 was behind glass), but the staff member told me that the shutter was exactly the same as the M240. The slightly quieter sound apparently is simply a result of the top plate being aluminium.
