Leica M (Typ 262) - Reduction to Rangefinder Photography (at 1000 € less)

I like this camera. And if I had not bought a 240 earlier this year, I would buy this.

Personally, I hope the replacement for the 240 is actually a better version of the 262, and the 240 line gets dropped. This would make a lot of sense for Leica... Q for small and fixed lens, 26x for classic rangefinder photography, and SL for all the "new" tech aspects of photography (EVF, auto-focus, video, etc.)

What I would want next would be this 262 but even smaller form factor (M6 classic), 24MP sensor with great ISO up to 25K. That's it.

Don't be so sure. That brass plate is HEAVY. When I get home I'll weigh it.

From the Leica website regarding the 262:

"The top plate is engineered from durable aluminium [sic], which makes it around 100 grams lighter."

..............

It may well predict a nice full-featured and advanced M240 successor some time ahead.  ;)

This is the key to the whole thing.

Until we see what the new M will bring (not this one announced today) it's impossible to know whether the M line has an interesting future.

I hope and expect it has but other plausible interpretations are possible.

I am curious about the description of the shutter as 'quieter than the M240'.  I wonder if this is in all modes and not just use of LV, and whether it refers to the motor re-cock or the shutter sound itself.  No big deal, just curious.

Aluminium is the German/Dutch spelling.

I'm not surprised if there are simultaneous, but different directions...  http://www.l-camera-forum.com/topic/253272-product-position-and-future-of-the-m240-with-the-new-sl/?p=2931988

The 262 seems to address the 'traditionalist' camp....I suspect that the new M will cater to the more 'innovative' folks, as rumored patents may suggest.

In the meantime, I think this is a smart more, particularly the lower price point, as was the case with the M-E.

In my mind this is clear:  The M line going forward will be spit in two.  And, there is good reason for this.

If, Leica had continued the M line by adding features found in the Q and SL, Leica would have in essence turned the "essential" M experience into a ever more complex experience that very much is not the "essential."  But, on the other hand I am certain Leica was conflicted as to what new advancements in technology to add to the M without changing it so much that it was no longer appealing to why many users choose the M.

Clearly the new M will have two lines.  Classic(Leica mis-named the entry level) and Premium.

The Classic can continue to take advantage of better sensors and electronics, hopefully smaller and lighter.  Next version may utilize a smaller battery to help make it a smaller body and lighter.  Why use a huge battery if there is no LV?

The Premium will receive all of the additions from the SL technology, such as better video.  Also, the Premium will find a better EVF from the Q or the SL.  Who knows, maybe it will become an EVF-RF hybrid.  Leica could feel unencumbered to add any new technology it wanted and some users would love it and others wouldn't see the point and would be happy with the Classic.

I see this as win-win.  Great for Leica and even better for users.  Bravo Leica.  I hope Leica, going forward, will make the two lines even more distinct and the M-Classic even more essential.

My point in the post just above (and speculated yesterday), as we simultaneously commented.

Jeff,

Yes, I think many here are beginning to see this as not just one more product, but more of a statement of Leica ideology.  Leica really does understand Das  Wesentliche.   :)

Pretty cool new camera, lighter, quieter and cheaper. I might have gone for it when looking for my used M240 but at 4K the 240 was hard to pass up.

I don't use live view a lot but I do use it to check lens to RF calibration, mighty handy for that. I'm set with my 240 for now. Maybe this is a new trend for Leica though, a very good new M to be had for not an obnoxious amount of money and the -12% off going since May could be the "new normal"....

Actually, when it is written aluminium it would be Dutch, when written Aluminium it would be German. In the technical specs( downloads- Datenblatt.  )  it is written: " aluminum "...

the real reason for the reduction is to allow Leica to offer a simpler version of the M in order for them to reduce the price and increase sales prior to a new model next year.

True. The new top plate (material and design) plus the reworked shutter recock mech might be in the next M.

The 240 is a very good tool, I am fine with sensor upgrades from time to time (e.g. the SL-sensor with M micro lenses).

A really big step would be electronic frame lines calculated according to the postion of the focusing mech, showing always exactly what the sensor would capture....

I like the LV/EVF options of my M240P for wider angle scenarios; and happy to have them available when needed.  I have very little interest or use having video available in a still camera; if you want video, buy a video camera.  Lastly, 80g lighter is less than 3oz, I can't really see how this could be any sort of factor in the decision making process.  I think we all can figure out how to reduce the weight of our bags by 80g elsewhere.  I'm quite happy with my M240P and  would not change the purchase decision I made less than 2 months ago.
