Sod you, Jono.

Moderator! Moderator!  Look what that John said to me!!! :D

I'm actually getting used to carrying it as well - all the way down here today . . . . and yes I did go for a swim, which, (those of you who live in the UK at the moment will realise,) was an act of extreme bravery (or possibly stupidity!)

This rotting old fishing boat has become my standard 'calibration' subject for every new camera and lens I get  so I can compare a known subject to previous images with other equipment taken from the same spot.

In my view it compares quite favorably to the 50mm Summilux Asph. and the 35 Summilux FLE.

SL with 24-90.

John ... This image is superb. When you say it compares favourably ... how close to the primes? :-) The reason I ask is that I don't shoot with luxes, have 50 cron and 35 summarit, shoot on SL and am happy with them. Awaiting 90-280 ...

Mirek,

I've only had the 24-90 for two weeks and simply haven't had an opportunity to test the zoom formally or extensively, but I feel confident stating that in my eyes the 24-90 VE zoom is close enough to the primes in the most important performance areas, for the chief determining factor of which camera / lens combination I use for future outings, photo trips and / or particular images will not be image quality,  rather, which set-up is the more practical, convenient and logical to use, because I feel that the two mentioned primes and the Vario-Elmar perform very similarly in most important parameters. I think most of us will know a lot more after a year or so of intensive use of the new SL and it's dedicated lenses under a variety of conditions. Never forget the speed of the Lux lenses, which is probably primarily responsible for the unique rendering of these 2 current Summilux lenses, but I feel the SL Vario-Elmar is optically a 'smoother' lens in comparison to the 2 primes we're discussing.

Personally, I expect the whole equation / debate of M lenses vs. the SL dedicated zooms will take on a whole new dimension after the introduction of the 50 f1.4 AF lens for the SL.

You state you're happy with the 50 Cron & the 35 Summarit - I too consider a 50 Cron a wonderful & perfectly satisfactory lens (which I will never part with ), but I respectfully submit you'd be happier with a 35 Asph, Cron. The long and short of it is.........it's simply a better lens than the Summarit.
